louise end of feb?
« on: Feb 04, 2011, 02:57 PM »
Anyone doing lake louise or crosswind last weekend of February?  Looks like I might have the chance to head that way. Not sure if I should haul the camper or try to stay at the lodge, but it should be fun either way!

I make my way up there every weekend but that one I will be in sunny Florida working on skin cancer and dreaming of the big one. Salmonman will be there catching the one that I lost the week before though.

I'm trying to put something together with a couple fishing partners right now. 25th-27th, not sure about using the lodge or bringing a camper up. I'd love to be able to roam the lake using 4 wheelers but need some accurate info on how much snow is there and how packed it is. We've got snowmobiles too but prefer the wheelers. Who's hoarding all the Lake Louise info?

Youll beable to use the wheelers as the groomed trails on the lake cover alot of area...Not all the lake but from the lodges you can access the entire length of louise and susitna and there are side trails from the main lake to shore via cabin owners trails...Camper vs lodge...camper will be cheaper lodge will be warmer...I will be in Mexico myself or I would open up the shack for yall...

In less there is a significant snow fall I would think you could use the wheelers any where on the lake I would get some chains but there is only about a foot of snow now. Salmonman moved his shack with his truck not long ago with chains on. I would not drive all over the lake in a truck there are some warm springs and thin spots.

Wheelers may or may not do well on the lake. It all depends on snow conditions and temperature. JKW rode my old Honda out the other day and it was a bear! The tires aren't too good on it, but even with new tires, it would have been a tough ride. You can ride a wheeler on some of the ice, but I prefer a snowmachine so I can go where I want.

Ok, I've assembled an all-star cast of semi-pro anglers and will be @ the lodge on the 25th. There are 4 of us as it stands now. Rooms have been booked, wives have been notified, whisky has been bought. All that's left is to sharpen the augers & bait the hooks.

For any of you shanty dwellers that want to meet up that weekend send a p.m. I will also post some more descriptive details once we're a little closer to the dates. We shouldn't be too hard to spot. There will also be live music at the lodge that weekend so it may just turn into a real adventure weekend *wink*

Better watch out or it will be a party weekend instead of a fishing weekend! ;)

Alrighty then. We're all set to go, heading North about midday Friday, probably won't make it out on the ice until Saturday morning but everyone is stoked to go, hopefully the lakers will cooperate and show up too. Looks like it might be a tab warmer than last weekend too.

Fishing report to follow, good or bad.

Probably a bad time for wheelers...... a dump of snow can change everything. Last trip was great for snow..... now there is alot of overflow.

Sorry for not reporting sooner, in all honesty there just isn't much to report other than 4 wheelers can indeed get around both on and off the packed trails but the drifts can make it difficult. I'm glad I opted to bring my snowmachine and cargo sled. The temps were brutal last weekend with a low of -35 observed in the lodge. We gave it hell all day Saturday trying numerous spots, depths, baits ect. I'd say the fish were tight lipped but that would be an understatement. Not once did I manage to mark a single live fish on my showdown. Portable shanty's also work well as 4 wheeler garages, preheating sure helps.

We went armed with a boat load of tips, pointers, lake maps, advise, and well wishes from several is.com members and LL regulars but sometimes you just can't buy a bite. In other news the 5 of us enjoyed a 50's style sock hop hosted by the LL lodge and had a few rounds of beers to console ourselves. The hamburgers were on the small side but the homemade milkshake I had was awesome. I did learn that even when it's too cold out for my sled to start, the duramax with fire off no problem.

I'm going to try heading back up in April for longer daylight and better temps.
I don't care who you are, -35 with a 30-40 mph wind takes the fun right out of being outdoors.
