Boy's weekend out
« on: Feb 16, 2011, 04:44 PM »
we decided last minute to head somewhere else with all the talk of slush on the chain lakes.we got a cabin 150 yards from the lakeshore and cant wait to get there.my question is i havent fished for lakers in years now and wanted to know guys personal preference on bait and hook size.....

size 10 or 12 trebles???????and

suckers or shiners?????????

now i know the best bait ever is smelt and we will try to jig some but if we cant find em what is your next best bait?simple one word answers are fine lets not start a huge debate here! ;D

We fished for lakers twice this week. We used med. size shiner minnows and did very well. A guy with us tried sucker minnows and didn't get a bite. We use #2 hooks. Good luck.

#12 is the biggest I use, 14 or 18 depends on the body of water.
Shiners have seemed to work the best for me. Used to do well with suckers on one lake but haven't in a couple years now.
Don't forget your WD-40.... ;D

I have been using the red Eagle Claw. Not sure if that has made a difference or the Vanish Fluoro 8lb leaders.

No difference at that depth ... yes the color red will disappear, but the hook is solid and will have a profile...

If a guy liked suckers on Otisco, that's because he was looking for tigers.  No lakers there.
I'm a-going to stay where ya sleep all day,
Where they hung the jerk who invented work
In the big rock candy mountains.

How did you make out on the trip?  I hope there were 96 swinging flags for you.

I bet you stayed warm that second day.  At least you got to bunk up with your man crush.

the second day we stayed out of the wind pretty much.we did have a 300 dollar shanty die on us and alot of heartburn.must have been hitlers great cooking!!!!next year we will be right on the water.maybe 4th lake for lakers on the 2nd day and 1st lake for the first day.what a great group of guys we have though.sometimes its not about the fish, but the fishing itself.
