Looking for Deep Laker tips
« on: Feb 21, 2011, 05:27 PM »
In the Superior shores of the U.P. we jig for lakers in anywhere from 180-260 fow.  I wish they were easier to find shallower because doing bait checks is a PITA!

I could really use some tips though because I have yet to land a lake trout through ice.  People around me will be catching small "fats" or ciscowetts but I'm looking to target some bigger ones.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

I haven't fished them that deep but have caught some down to 120'.
I catch most of my trout jigging a gold williams whitefish tipped with a piece of herring/sucker of cisco. Your best friends when deep jigging are a good flasher and a reel full of braided line.
Remember that thos lakers can come through at any level not just down at the bottom.
Watch your flasher for fish sneaking through higher up in the water column.
