Finally iced a pike this year!
« on: Jan 07, 2011, 11:52 PM »
Went out to Nancy Lake Tuesday and put in 13 hours on the ice :o  Had three total hits, two that ended up with empty hooks, one with a 26 incher.

Fried it up for dinner tonight.  Probably could have had some with the spear, but the water was too murky where I was at.  Could hardly see 3ft down.  Was marking fish near bottom (9ft), but couldn't see a damn thing.  Not even the egg shells I carpeted the bottom with!  Tried luring them further up, but only got a glimpse of one without the spear in hand.

I suppose I could add some helpful info to this post as well!  I was fishing the edge of a weed bed (although that goes without saying), I was using green label herring on my homemade quick strike rigs.  The only hits I had came on the orange beaded one, although I tried the rainbow gambit of colors!  The Vexilar FL-18 came in handy!  Let me get the bait into the right zone without guessing!

I have wanted to try the vexilars. Can't get over the prices for those things. Congrats on your pike.

If you want to try a Vex, get on Craigslist down in the northern Lower 48. I found a ton of them for sale in Wis., Minn., areas. I ended up buying a Marcum Showdown 5.6 and love it.

Nancy lake and the connected small lakes seem to be almost a biological desert. Even the pike are few and far between. Congrats on catching anything at all there. That 26"er would have taken their winter derby a few years back. Has anyone on the board fished Trapper lake this year?

I caught a 24" on 2lb test line Saturday.  Took 10 min to land it.  Used a Genz 17" UL rod and Fiska jig.
