Tip Up Question?
« on: Feb 24, 2011, 10:05 PM »
Has any body had luck with just putting a steal leader on the end of tip up line for lakers.  Your do you use the leader of mono line on the end of the tip up line?

Exactly. I fish on Lake George and the water clarity is unreal. You can see a secchi disk about 100 feet down lol. I am confident you will have less strikes with a steel leader. Lakers are an elusive, finicky fish. Sometimes they will just blow up your bait and bury the hook, but more often if they feel too much drag or see something that doesn't look right they won't take it. The older lakers get, the easier to spook them. Just go to a rock sholl in late october, turn on a bright light and see which trout hang around the longest. The big mommas will wander off immediately and the 18-25" will hang around for supper.

Stick with the clear stuff

Flouro for everything but northern, for that I use braided and I'm not even sure why because I've caught plenty of Northern on Flouro and never had a problem. I'm sure steel/titanium leaders have a purpose, I just don't know what it is.
