believe me guys,im a traditional fisherman.but does anybody have a opinion on fish scent?never used it and probably never will but keep hearing more and more about it.recently read a article in midwest outdoors about ULTRABITE scent for walleye from a traditional fisherman and he reported somewhat dramatic results in favor of scent.just wondering, anybody out there ever used it and what were your results?

Welcome to the Shanty!
I found that scents, fish oil, cod liver oil, etc tend to float on the water in the hole and then they stick to the line. Once you reel in your line, the scent congeals on your line and gums up the reel. I used something called smelly jelly and it turned my 2 pound test into something that looked like silly putty!

I have used the Mr. Walleye (I believe thats what it was) spray on scents before. I sprayed the stuff on my live minnow before putting it down the hole. I had absolutely no problem with it gumming or messing up my line. It did seem to help. I think scents can be a great idea, not only for their attractant qualities but if for no other reason, to eliminate human or other foreign scents you transfer from your hands to your bait/lure.

Being in the great outdoors is not a matter of life or death. Its far more important than that!

FTD, I use Smelly Jelly and have not experienced any problems with the stuff. All I do is wipe a little bit on my hooks and then put on my bait. I don't see how you had it gum up your reels this way? I think that it does help to a point.

I've been using smelly jelly for few years now  and i'm pretty happy with it.  It help in covering up human scent in my opinion more than anything.   People who smoke might leave nicotine residue on their baits when touching with their fingers and I even heard that some peoples saliva might put fish off when you wet the line to make a knot.  I mostly use it on walleye soft plastics and plugs when fishing at night to leave a scent trail and on the swimbaits in the winter.  I also never had a problems with any kind of scent clogging up my reels and never had any left on my line.  So I don't know what that's all about ?       J
