Dude, get a hand auger. you have to at least earn your strips before you go the automatic route.

hand auger in north dakota, now we are talking, used to have to put on a 1 foot extension on the old Jiffy power auger when I fished Devils Lake, they would drive motorhomes out on the ice to fish out of.

I did mostly the river, not quite as thick but still thick, had too pick holes that already had been drilled sometimes, at least that way it wouldn't take me an hour... lived on the west side of the state...

The two brands you're looking for are the "Nimrod" adapter and the "Ice Master" adapter.  Nimrod is slightly cheaper,  but Ice Master comes with a bungee device to guard against accidental disengagement of your chuck thereby losing your auger down the hole.  You can purchase them online at the manufacturer's website; On occasion Bass Pro, Cabela's or Gander Mountain online will have it.

don't buy a used electric auger, there's a reason they're selling it...  :'( stick to a hand auger till you can drill as many holes as you want and not be too tired to fish, then you can go ahead and get lazy.

I have an adapter for a drill and it works pretty well if the ice isn't too thick and you don't have to drill very many holes. The cold temperatures would zap the batteries really quick. I had to buy a couple of extra batteries since each battery would only drill about 3 holes. It also struggled with ice over 12" thick. I have moved on to a power auger which works great when it starts.

Save the nickels and get a gas auger.  My LazerMag is now on its 11th season and still runs like a top.  Paid $210 for it new and it was the best money I have ever spent on anything for fishing.  Sure, they are like $430 now, but they won't be going down in price in the future, only up.

Found this interesting video on using drills for ice auggers.

DuckSlayer...That's pretty hard core drilling for anyone's standards.  I've been introduced to ice fishing now for about 3 years and each season I seem to refine my "system" a little more.  Besides the flasher (HB Ice-55) the most important thing in my arsenal is that auger.  I'd tell you the sweet deal I got but I'd fear for my life if I did.  However, punching holes in the ice is now a breeze.  If the fish aren't in my area...I move.  With your background I'm sure there isn't much you haven't seen, but a power auger is a must.  Check out the Jiffy Propane model.  I think that's the cat's meow.  StrikeMaster also has a 4 stroke model...pretty cool.  And the one I have is an Eskimo Z71.  Takes about 2 pulls when it's cold...one when warm and that baby rips a hole in no time.  Good luck and let me know what you decide.  IceFlyer

I'm in the process of building an adaptor for my hand drill that will let me hook it to my 18V cordless drill.  I'll let you guys know how it works out.  I should have it ready for this weekend.

bought me a Nils auger and that thing drills fast and effortlessly.  I've only looked at my old stikemaster hand auger and wondered why I still have that thing.  As for power I would like to get one eventually but I can honestly drill plenty fast enough and doesn't tire me out so I can punch plenty of holes and move around without thinking twice.

X2! Although i am thinking of getting a drill adapter for my 6" nils. Used one for my 6" mora it worked o.k. But the nils drillls almost effortlessly by hand. Bet you could get a quite a few holes on one battery with a drill. If you do use a drill keep the batteries warm, and ALWAYS bring your hand crank too. I made that mistake once.  :%$#!: :%$#!:

Yeah, 10-4 on the keeping the batteries warm and bringing the handle.  I finished the adaptor last night and I think it will work well.  It's not as nice as it could be, because "I" made it, but what the heck.  The price was right.
