Stanley Electric Staple Gun
« on: Jan 18, 2005, 11:32 AM »
I have recently completed the folding end poly tarp style shanty.  ½ inch plywood for the ends.  Trouble I’m getting is the wind whipping the tarp so bad it’s really loud.   I have three poles to separate the ends.  One at the ridge, and one on either side.  When I first built it, I had the tarp way too tight.  I didn’t have the spreader at the top, so the ends bowed in as I stretched the tarp.  When I was done, the door wouldn’t close.  Had to re-do one end, with a lot less tension.  Then, I put the pole in at the very top.  That helped, but the tarp still rattles in the wind.  It’s real tight some places, but loose in others.  Also left a row of holes a couple inches in from the end.  I have enough tarp to do it a second time.  With experience learned from the first time, I hope to do a better job.

One of the problems is putting enough force behind the staple gun to put the staple into pretty hard wood.  That is how I bent the plywood out of shape.   I saw an electric staple gun at Wal-Mart.  Made by Stanley, for about $28.   Anybody Have any experience with it?  If it would “shoot” the staple into the wood without having to apply so much force, I really think I can do a better job.  I'm thinking of past experience using a nail gun.  You can shoot a framing nail, without putting much force against the board.
I enjoy that perfect peace -- that peace beyond all understanding, which comes at it's maximum, only to the man who has given up golf.

I just last week end made the same shanty (again :) and have the Stanly staple gun yes it has enough power to hammer into the plywood just need to makesure its flat and use some push with it. although my gun is probably 25 or so old the new ones are probably better at this.
but i just used the staple to hold the tarp inplace long enough to nail som small narrow laths over the top on the staples as you will find that the tarp pulls out from the staples very quickly.
dont glue or nothin, just nail or maybe screw the laths on. as my first shack of this design (witch is only a 1 man) is atleast 20 years or so old and still gets used every week and you need to change the tarp every now and then.

yes I agree, the staples won't hold for long under tension, woodlathe and screws should hold it nicely. ( i am speaking from experiance) I built the same one about ten years ago, and found out that it was too heavy for what I needed. I now have a clam junior, and I rarely use it now a day's unless it get's in the single digits.remeber to get good ventalation.

Thanks guys, Just waht I wanted to hear.  I do have the wood pieces over top of the staples.  If I can just quiet it down in the wind, I'll get along fine.  I also have the Fish Trap Guide, but there is just not enough room.  I'm too tall to use it, imho.  I have seen other models with far more headroom.  Live and learn, i guess.

I have Bostitch Pneumatic stapler. What I did fisher was I bought some TV antenna wire and folded my poly tarp under it and then used my pneumatic stapler with 1/2 inch staples. It hasn't let go yet.
