Performed Emergency Runner Surgery Today
« on: Feb 05, 2011, 08:36 PM »
Well had quite a day today I was not looking forward to but it had to be done. Made a last minute trip up to the shack last week to get my jigging poles for the moosehead trip and noticed that my shack got caught in the slush It did not look to bad last weds but this morning the slush had almost made it to my floor which sits on 2x10 pt runners. So me pops and my uncle and my 10 yr old nephew went up to block her up a bit. I brought a bunch of blocking my floor jack and all the pry tools I could muster up pops had his small floor jack and chisel and some liquid refreshments. Chipped and jacked till noon and she finally popped out time for a beverage. Went to block her up and realized the pop was not a pop but both runners spillting right off of the bottom brackets. So now I have a area around the shack at least a foot deep of water. I shovel an area big enough to slide the shack over to and get out of the moat. What to do I thought. I decided to empty out the shack and replace the skis. I We took the shack and tipped it on its side and blocked her up in case I did nit return today. Made the run back to the launch and loaded everything up and ran home(45mins) Unloaded all the shack interior stuff stove heater pots pans etc. and loaded up the generator, drill, sockets, wrenches and circular saw and back on the road. Stopped and picked up 2 2x12 they had no 2x10 but was in a jam got back to the launch at 2:50 unload the snowmobile, sled and load it up with all the tools and strap the 2x12 to the sled and away I go I am flying solo now dad is shot from the extraction and uncle is soaked head to toe and the nephew I did not have the patience left to deal with him.  I get the old runners unbolted and removed seemed like I was making decent time and then the sky opens up with big flakes I get the new skis on and redrilled and bolted into place and cut the ends. My Tool box is full of snow my sled is full of snow and my arse is soaked and starting to drag. I still have about 3" of standing water on the ice so I set up some blocks 2 4x4 high and begin to flip her back over. I get one runner on the blocks... cool Its gonna work I set up the other blocks and begin to doubt my ability to do solo If I miss the blocks I am screwed. I see a snowmobile at another shack a few hundred yards away. So I ride over and ask the to gentleman for a hand. They were in a middle of  a game of cribbage but were observing the surgery through the window and said they were impressed that I even got the new skis on. They agreed and came over and helped me with the final flip of the shack I asked if they were IS members and they said never heard of it. I cant thank them enough.  Load everything back into the sled and back to the launch reload snowmobile and sled and back home. If I can give anyone here on IS some advice it would be NEVER LET YOU SHACK FREZZE IN. I think what happened was because I drilled 2 jiggin holes to use in the shack and this last snow pushed so much water out it got me... bad. The pond is in terrible shape 6" slush everywhere. So if anyone knows where I can find an old automobile hood pm me I am gonna make some call monday to the junk yard.

I was always shown last century, all traps are to be spread out away from the shack. We never had any holes nearby except the original ones to anchor the shack on the initial trip. No jig holes, Vex'es, HB's, nuthin', and we STILL had to lift the shack at least once a season.

Now, Swish Cheese the whole lake...

I enjoy helping people out,,, which way did you come in?

That really sucks.

I thought going headfirst over my snowmobile handlebars (and throught my windshild) after fetching up on a rock was a pretty bad day...now I feel fortunate.

Catch up to you later.

Yikes!  I'm going out today to assist in moving two shacks.  One is getting buried, the other we are going to prevent from getting buried.  Hope it goes better than your went!

Wow, Good job Man! I think a lesser human would pull any identification from the shack and give it a kiss goodbye! What a huge pain in the ice! Great tenacity!
