I don't think you're supposed to paint them with anything? Are you talking about painting the spot where the solder goes??

I read somewhere that when resoldering that spool back on, to use gold colored paint. What popped into my head right away regarding the color and spot painting it, was model paint.

clean the area and use fingernail polish. it's enamel and sticks well. use a color to match the surrounding area or a couple of coats of clear for protection. EZ and cheap. usually less than a buck a bottle.  $.25 per bottle at salvation army or St. Vinnies resale store.

I posted before about relubing Beaver Dam tip-ups and what I said was that after the spool is resoldered back on the shaft I spray them with gold Rustoleum. I have been using this method for many years and my tip-ups some that are 30 years old look brand new. If you choose to do your own tip-ups then I highly recommend the light coat of paint. After all it's the way they are made at the factory and they make the best most reliable tip-ups there are.
