portable or permanent house?????
« on: Jan 07, 2005, 06:43 PM »
Just curious, what type of fish houses do you all like to fish in and why, a portable house or a permanent house. I have a 8X12 permanent house. I like the idea of having a home away from home to go to. Just have a hot spot marked on the gps and park. If it gets dead, then move to another honey hole for a couple weeks until the action lightens up. (the lake I fish on is huge, it is easy to move from spot to spot) Like to know your comments.

For years I had the permanant shack,,but a few years ago I bought a portable..although it may not have all the comforts of the Big ole shack..it fits easily into the back of the truck, doubles as a sled, easliy set up and taken down.....I've really expanded my fishing area with the portable...The ole wooden shack is now a tool shed! ;D

I have a permanent shack, for the wife, kids, and grandchildren.  My own is a Frabill Ranger 3 man, that I pack in the back of my pickup, along with the power auger and the necessary equipment to keep it running.  Needless to say, our family enjoys winter!!! ;D ;D

I only have a portable. I have never tried a permanent shanty. I can't sit still that long! Also I fish too many different lakes to make a permanent shanty worthwhile.

I like to use both we have a permanant one in our hot spot, if the fish aint there then I like to set out in my portible. If I fishing alone the portible is the way I go.

I use both also.  I put the shanty in my favorite spot, then use my t-p or otter cabin to go out in deeper water or go to the new hot spot.  I love the comfort and room in the perminent, but I love the mobility of the portables.  Both have their pro's and cons.

Definetly a portable. No sense in sitting in one spot if the fish arent there. If the fish move, I move. I guess it depends on why you are going ice fishing. Permanents seem to me a more of a social thing, which is fun too, but for serious fish hunting, you need to be mobile.

i have a clam guide when the wife goes along and a frabill ranger solo when i am on my own.  A guy here in Watertown dumped a 20 thousand dollar shack in last week, left the furnace on for 4 days in 30 degree temps and only 12 inches of ice. He owns the ford dealership so i guess he can afford to replace it....lol ::) ::) ::) ::)
