Wire leader
« on: Jan 28, 2011, 01:17 PM »
I have been using cheapo walmart wire leaders by mustad (30 cm black).  Although the price is right I wonder if it affects my hook ups some.  Does anyone have any suggestions on brand?  Maybe I am over thinking this.

I've switched to 80 lb. mono  just in case they dont like the feel or taste of steel. Thing is the mono kinks when you store it on the spool.

That, and if the fish gets gut-hooked, and you don't plan on keeping it, you end up losing your leader.
The heavy mono or flouro is a good alternative.

I do alot of crimping for offshore.  you can tie 80 and 65 lb fluorocarbon if you take your time, lubricate the line wiht saliva and sslllloooowwwwlllyyyy tighten the knot.

Ive lost too many fish to mono, I go to Michaels craft store and get nylon coated stainless steel wire, I like .018  thickness, youll also need some good crimps I picked some up today at Dicks.

a uni knot is a good knot for the flouro and lip balm instead of spit. I also put some epoxy over  the knot .

The albright knot is great for connecting 2 lines.

After reading reports from the pike highliners on the site a few dozen times this year, Im mixing a few crimped flouro leaders in the bunch but the wire keeps winning. ??? Yesterday my 30lb Malin wire outfished 50lb and 60lb flour again. Its .015 dia brown color home made crimped with a 2/0 Gama. 3 rd trip in a row the wire got the pike. Whats the dia. of BOA ?---------------SS

I've used 30lb mono at wordens for the last 7 seasons got my first cut off two weeks ago. I have used flouro but the memory is horrible. Just upped to 50 momoi caught 6 since last weekend no problem u gotta take it easy on um let them run I fished with a guy who would brake them on 80. The less pressure u put on them the less they fight you just make sure u set the hook good.

How did the tieable wire work you bought ? Im wondering if my Malin hair thin wire (.015) is less visible than the heavy flouro in the STAINED water. When I look at Dead Bait Daves fish, the thought of lighter leaders makes me shiver.---------------------SS
