Dave gens rod issue?!?!?
« on: Jan 28, 2011, 11:04 PM »
I bought a Dave genz true blue rod and reel combo at the beginning of the season and have had a ton of trouble with getting rats nests that form around the reel. Th line that I put on it is the fire crystal ice. I was just wondering if anybody else has had this issue and If so what you did to fix it.

Thank you in advance!

Sure your line isn't all twisted up?

Make sure the line is going on the reel the same way the line is coming off the spool.Another thing to try is loosen your drag just enough to where its still kinda tuff to pull off the reel and take a 100yds or so off while giving tension on the line then reel back up,and make sure you leave about 1/8" or 1/16" of the spool showing....And when fishing never close the bail by reeling.Always close the bail with other hand then make sure the line is in the slot. That is all i have hope it helps!!

I have to agree with Krayfish.  Closing the bail by hand and giving the line a slight tug will all but eliminate any issues with rats nests.  After awhile it is second nature and quick.  I've tried to convince my old man to do this, he won't, sure provides entertainment when the fishing's hot and he's fumbling with another tangle!

Somehow a fish'n buddy is having about same problem with Fireline Crystal.  I think it's important to manually close bail and manually pull the line tight and place it on the line roller.  I don't think he pulls the line tight at all.  He just drops lure, close bail manually and fish.

One might have to examine how the line lays on the spool very carefully.  Check to see if the line is burying itself at the ends of the spool.

The thing I've noticed, too, with Fireline Ice is this:  heavier test line does not fish smaller jigs well at all.  The line doesn't pull tight and you really do tend to get loops.  It doesn't pack down on the reel as you retrieve, not really lying on the reel well.  I think you're more likely to get twist this way, too.
