HOW MANY TAKE TRIPS
« on: Jan 19, 2011, 08:29 PM »
I was just wondering how many of you guys from Alaska take trips to the lower 48 to ice fish or fish in general? Where do you go or where have you gone before?

incredibly expensive to travel outside - especially with a family.  Most that leave do so in the winter and head for warm weather and blue water fishing!

Yeah i would say so. Here in pa they put them stupid paste fish everywhere i can't stand it. I would rather be fishing for the salmon then fishing for those stupid trout that come from the race ways. Every year i take a trip to NY to lake Ontario for the salmon.

I take trips, but not focused on fishing.  However, I usually add fishing to the schedule if possible.  Being in the military, I've fished in a lot of states, as well as a lot of countries!  Makes for some great R & R time!

I do not make any trips just for fishing, (though someday I would like to, probably not on ice though), but when I am back visiting family in the area's I grew up, we always make sure to get out on the ice for some local fishing action.  That would be the western Wyoming and Northern Utah areas, I have fished a lot of lakes in those areas.

I don't take trips outta state just for fishing, although I'm hoping to change that sometime soon.  I do take a fly out trip to Yakutat every year for some Steelhead fishing, which costs the same as going outta state.  Maybe next year I will head outta state for some brown trout.  That would be sweet!

Fish On!
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

Well I did manage to spend some time outside Alaska this summer....  The family made a trip back to Wisconsin and the boys and I managed to fish quite a bit.  My boys have never caught anything close to traditional warm water fish from the Midwest, so it was a great time!!!  Big small mouth bass out of lake Michigan, crappies, gills, sunnies, large mouth, perch in the Rhinelander area, and lots of "other" fish like catfish caught on Winnebago etc...  It was a great time especially for them seeing such a wide variety of fish we simply don't fish for in Alaska.   ;D

I dont see a reason to leave here.....Heres a rundown of our "events"

November- March: Lake Trout, pike and burbot ice fishing and snowmachining, as well as trapping/varmint/rabbit/upland bird hunting

April: overall the slowest month but still lots to do such as preparing and marking bear bait stations and gettin ready for summer.

May: Bear hunting, awesome spring breakup fishing for trout and pike, and the king salmon season kicks off about the middle of the month.

June: Red and king salmon fishing as well as trout

July: reds, kings, silvers, pinks and chum salmon fishing in full swing! also a month for scouting out hunting areas.

August and September: my favorite time of year- moose, sheep, goat, and caribou hunting are top priorities: silver salmon fishing is at its very best as well.

October: Blacktail Deer and bear hunting takes up most of my free time.

So as you can see, there just ISNT time to travel out of state.

Its better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!
