4-wheelers
« on: Jan 21, 2011, 10:55 AM »
any opinion on best,(most reliable) machine for the ice?i have polaris 700 sportsman,  just blew gear case housing, tranny. not sure how. looking at 1500$ for repairs! i lean to four wheelers because i can use it year round, if i choose. just curious about ideas from anyone with more experience in using or working on them.

Most reliable for on the ice I beleive is a 2 stroke polaris atv with chain drive. But those are over 10 years old.

I have heard of some polaris atv's blowing housing. Not sure if it was a flaw in the case??

Did you pop the tranny or a front/rear housing. Most I have seen is the rear housing.

I have a suzuki 500 and an arctic cat 400. Minor repairs to both and they both run fine, very dependable.

Thats what took a crap on the few that I heard of. It's not like it is a large occorance. I have beat the crap out of my 94' sportsman. I have yet to tighten the chains, havn't even look ed at the belt or clutching. It has 1000 miles on it. All of those miles are either plowing or pulling a ice shack. No easy miles at all. Only thing I have done to it is a few plugs and counter balance oil changes.

There are alot of guys on here with polaris atv's, with no issues. I would fix it and run it.

I have a polaris sportsman 500 (2003), no problems w/ it. Push alot of snow w/  it . Even put it in my pond 3 years ago, pulled it out with my bobcat & hung it upside down to drain out. Changed all the fluids & runs like a dream!

Can am outlander max. what ever size you want. cant beet rotax motor. The 400 is light enough and has pull start back up if battery dies. Little things like that can really save your day some time. Whatever you look at i recomend seeing if it has a kick or pull start for back up. just something to think about.

Everyone is gonna state that what they have is the best... ;D  I have had so many atv's and atc's over the years.  Most people dont like three wheelers but I love them.  Honda atc's cannot be beat...literally.   I currently have a 250 big red (shaft drive) a 200m, two 200s' a yamaha tri zinger, a yamaha 200, a yamaha 250.  I also have a old yamaha timberwolf atv and a new honda recon atv.  I have a arctic cat 330 sled now.  small but light and gets the job done.    The atv's I can load up in a truck by myself with no ramp, they are easy to get unstuck, and the honda's are reliable.  I have a favorite 200s that I take out over all the others.  I take it out to the islands from catawba, use it on my farm, and deer hunt with it.  I have never done anything but change the oil... this machine is a 1984 :o  I take that back i think i replaced the pull rope on it once or twice to be safe...  you can still always bump start them though.  As far as Im concerned Honda makes a great product, easy for local mechanics or yourself to work on and get parts for.  More dealerships than anyone else to get parts locally.  Im happy with the arctic cat sled I have.  Have had a few before.  Went with a small 330 to go to a single carb, less to go wrong and clean.  i have had doubles and triples and no longer have a desire to go that fast at any time...  I had a few old John deere 300's that ran great.  I should have never sold them.  Old kaw engines they ran, walbro carb, comet clutch.   I wish I could get those back... they were air cooled sleds not the liquid cooled ones they came out with... Anyways, those old atc's are work horses.  Easy to work on, little maintenance, you can get chains for the tires, and I have never not made it out to a spot where my friends on sleds are fishing.  You can also use them all year.  If you do get stuck in slush or snow you just stand up and whip the ass end around.  If still stuck just jump off , give it some gas with one hand, grab rear rack with the other, and push it out.  Very easy to do...   Or you could just drop 7 or 8 grand on a giant 4x4 atv thats as big as a s-10 and will require its own trailer.  In that case just by a old s-10, cut the doors off for safety, screw some studs into the tires and there you go...  Cheaper and lighter than the giant atv you see the yuppies going out on ;)    ps. that old honda atc of mine has dragged back more fish and deer than any other atv I know of.
