When I want to fish depth that are deeper then my leader will allow do fish get spooked when they see the line above the leader seeing how it's a thicker material and not fluorocarbon

I keep a spool of Fluorocarbon leader in my tackle bag, if they are spooky and use a longer length if I need to.

yea, it all depends on the fish you are after.  Pike are not that shy.  You can get away with a lot more with them as apposed to walleye.  The lake I fish has a large number of walleye, pike and some browntrout, so I mostly use mono or fluorocarbon all the way to the hook.  I have not had a problem, and have landed pike in the 40 inch range without any breakoffs.  Just check for nicks after every fish.
