Making LCD's work in cold
« on: Jan 06, 2005, 07:14 AM »
I have mentioned before I have a Colorpoint but still rather use my Zercom LPG 2000. It has a screen rated to -20 and it seems to me as real time as I could ever react to. I also have a Matrix 37 that has a very wide cone but haven't used it yet. I don't know if is rated as cold functioning as the LPG 2000 , but wondering if those that do have older units that they would like to use on the ice if you got those very clear vinyl bags used for waterproofing sold at outfitters stores ,..they have ziploc tops and thinking you could put a few small holes (or just invert them and zip them up to the cords) Then place one or two of those "hot hands" packets. in the bag. Should keep the unit warm for a long time and functional. I don't know if extreme cold really damages the units so you might have to prep them before you go out and wrap them in a towel ect until you get there. If I understand right people do leave them in garages and sheds etc in the winter but again it probably depends on the age and design of the units. I understand that newer units are  generally much more tolerant to the cold.  I just personally like watching my Zercom screen rather than my colorpoint.

My garmin gets a little slow in the cold, I used an old stocking hat with a few handwarmers under the screen and another in the bottom of the ice box and its always good to go and a little more protected from scratches too
Thanks for the Rapalas

I use to carry my lcd in the sled in the back of the truck to the lake.  It would be slow from the cold.  I started carrying it in the truck cab and kept it warm all the way to the lake.  It seems when it starts warm it stays that way and never gets slow from the cold.  You might try that, it may work for yours.
Here fishy fishy fishy, I don't want to hurt you, I just want to catch you!
