Mustang survival clothing breathability??????
« on: Jan 19, 2011, 01:11 AM »
I have a IDI Artic Armor suit and have found they do not breath at all.  When walking out to where we want to fish pulling our sleds or drilling holes the bibs and jacket get very wet inside from perspiration.  So, I was wondering if any one out there who has any of the Mustang survival clothing could help me out and tell me if there line of clothing breathes at all or builds up sweat like the IDI clothing.  Thanks  Fin

good morning.......my mustang suit doesn't breath you have to really dress down if you plan on a long walk out to your spot, but
when its cold and windy I'm glad I have it on ....they are amazingly warm.

Mustang products are designed as survival clothing.  Float, insulation and more important impermeable.   You will sweat your butt off during activity.  This is when mine is either full open or not worn at that time.  I have the full atlantic class exposure suit.   These excell when in the harsh conditions of wind and water in dirty cold sub sub zero temps.  I use it for travel on ATV or sled over water.   Great.   You can stand out unprotected allll day in the worst cold and wind.   Dont sweat inside these.  Remove the upper layer or take it off when working.  The suit gets stiff enough when its -20 celcius.  dont make it wet from sweat and let it freeze LOL.
When you go thru the ice , get dunked and crawl back out on to the ice.... the suit significantly reduces the wind from stealing your vital body heat.  This is the exposure the suit was designed to reduce - loss of heat in and out of the water.  After a few minutes of standing and the residual water runs out the wrists and ankles.  You will be walking again and generating needed heat.  Without a survival suit on ..... you may not be able to walk before exposure is a greater problem.   Serious !

Any cotton long underwear is REALLY BAD choice under any ice suit. Good underwear is "basewear", the likes of UnderArmor, is what you NEED to wear in this suit. UnderArmor is made to wick the sweat away from your skin. These suits (or any ice suit for that matter) will not breath and if you do something to break a sweat you will be chilled if there is no way to get this moisture away from your skin. Over the basewear you need to dress in layers for the weather and task. Often times it will become necessary unzip the jacket to cool yourself down.
