Anyone know about the ice/smelting up at twin islands in Magog-smelting has been good up there the last few years and want to get a bobhouse up there soon.

Answering this question has got me all nostalgic.  Mostly because I have fished for smelt on Magog since 1987 yet have done very little tip up fishing with the smelt I caught.  From 1995 - 1999 BC (before children) I used to catch smelt to sell to the bait shop for $.25 a piece and not get up from my bucket all day except to get the blood back to my a$$.  When I wasn't doing that I would catch a couple dozen on Saturday to bring to Willoughby to set up for big lakers and rainbows on Sunday.  Ahhhh the good old days BBR (before bait regulations).

So the the actual tip up fishing I have done there is very minimal.  I have caught steelhead in 3-6 FOW with a smelt and a 6.9 lb laker during last years Wrights tournament with a big smelt set up over deep water.  I have never caught a brown or salmon ice fishing.  I am now anxiously waiting for the trout opener so i can try some of the new rainbow techniques I have learned on this board.

Anyone know the ice thickness by the twins. Really want to know when it's good to drive on it. It's a long walk out there pulling a portable shanty!

Shacks out all over the ice around the islands... A couple trucks out there today. I was on 10 inches off the south end of the north island. Did about half a bucket and some good sized 9-10 inch perch.

Nice Tench.  Any big jack smelt?  I caught one Saturday, but I also caught some of the really small, skinny ones like I would always get on Seymour.  Never caught those on Magog before not sure what that means.

Not sure of your meaning of a jack smelt but I got some bigger ones but most are 5-7 inchers. I used a bigger hali and it seemed to keep the smaller ones from taking it so much. Did have a few skinny ones

Always just used hand line for panfish but got some tip ups this year to try out for fun while I fish. I'm completely ignorant on using them. Headed up to fish by the twins for smelt. Anything hit tip ups in that area? Any info welcome. Thanks.

I've seen folks catch lakers once and awhile close to the twins  but usually just some perch or pickerel-plaenty of lakers and salmon out away from the islands though

try night crawlers or dillies on a tipup for rainbows on willoby thats what i do and consistantly produces 3-6 pound rainbows

Thanks for the tip.  Sounds like a successful one too.  At least then your fishing while you trying to jig up some smelt for bait.

I tried Pautzke salmon eggs opening day on Magog with no success.  I'm thinking in a lake with abundant smelt those won't cut it.  Why eat tic tacs when you can have filet mignon.  Probably work better on Crystal.

What kind of hooks do you put them on?  Who sells dillies and crawlers?  Wrights?
