Auger troubles...
« on: Jan 16, 2011, 01:50 PM »
I just got an 8" eskimo stingray 33cc for christmas. Last weekend I drilled 30 holes and it worked fine. This weekend it took over two minutes to drill 10" of ice. The blades and point still look brand new, for some reason it just won't cut. I'm going to call the eskimo service line but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

do your cutting blades have a cover ? or did someone drop the blades on something hard ?

It has a cover and I always have the cover on when I'm not using it. And I'm the only one who has used it and haven't dropped it. The auger was brand new and have only drilled 30 or so holes. It worked fine last weekend and this weekend it just won't cut through ice. I even scraped off the snow and ice buildup on the blades and that didn't help.

Ive been fishing with my new hand auger for a month now. Fished with my gas auger this weekend and forgot how much of a pain in the a** they are. Heavy to drag, snow, slush buildup.  Dont want run nice.  Hand augers are by far easier and the way Id rather drill my holes...

Hand augers are lighter, but the last time I went I punched out 27 holes by hand.  After 15 I WISHED I brought my jiffy.  I retired my hand auger for the season.  Now there is more ice then the last time I went.

Re sharp your blades to the correct angle. Factory sharpening not always the best. Be sure the center "blade" is sharp also. I actualy used shims to change the knife angle a fraction and man does the ice fly ! Good luck to ya ! ;)2
If the women don't find ya handsome, they should at least find ya handy !  Fish on, gotta go ..........!!!

Doesn't take much ice build-up to stop the blades from cutting ??

make sure they are on tight.they can loosen up.doesn't take much to ding the blade either.you wont even know you did it.I have a twin blade laser mag and one little ding and it wont cut,but other wise it will out cut any twin blade auger on the market

Sounds like blade problems, unless your idle, gas mix or throttle settings went awry. Eyeball your blades good to make sure they aren't nicked.  Check for sharpness, check for tightness.  If everything checks out, make a shim out of a soda/beer can.  Use tin snips to shape it to mirror the blade.  Drill matching through-holes in the can and place under blade, tilting the blade forward or backward for best cutting angle.  Try it and see what you come up with.   My Eskimo has given me no trouble and i feel they are a good machine.

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

Better not go up against a nils power auger cause it would embarrass your twin blade laser mag

I would not give up on your gas operated, ice auger.  Its so expensive to try others.  Get the blades checked. Then go from there.  If you are young and can drill alot of holes, with a hand auger, even when the ice gets very thick, well good for you, but like alot of people I know, who use Chainsaws for a living ;D.  Check the blades first, and have someone, who can sharpen the blades, right. ;D
