muskratt
« on: Jan 10, 2011, 09:00 AM »
So me and my wife were fishing saturday and she was like something big just swam by my hole so I looked over and a big ol muskratt popped up out of the hole. It was hilarious she started freaking out and was trying to kick it. To top it off that was her first time ice fishing.

Ok this muskrat situation has happened to me. In one day I had a muskrat come up my hole three times and half way in my shanty.talk about a wake up call. I freaked out and tried kicking it down the hole lol. This same spot I fish is notorious for those kind of encounters.

That happened to me a while back on snow channels. About got him with my ice dipper
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

Seen them swimming by on the camera but never up the hole.  You don't want to get bit by one of them, I know from experience :o

For what a muskrat is going for this year I would say to thump him on the head and sell him!!! My brother-in-law traps and says prices are really good. He has sold a few for $8.00 each. (I can remember getting $3 - $5 each and was glad for it.)

Anyone ever have a beaver - the animal (mammal) - take a peek into your shanty?

That's exactly how I got bit, after I got my finger stitched up he headed straight to the stretcher.

I had that happen in my shappell 3000,the kind with the floor  and no way to get out fast. Scares the @#$% out of you. Gets the heart beating pretty good. It's worse than sight fishing and having a giant carp swim right under your hole. That always freaks me out too. Then I try to hook them, LOL

muskrat can be a vicious little critter when he needs to be...id pass on kickin at them.
Reach in and grabbed a "drowned", or at least what i thought was a drown muskrat back a few years ago while trapping, turns out he wasnt drowned, or even close to it... :o :o :o  worst part was the chain got caught in my coat, despite my most manly efforts(ok, screaming like a girl), i could'nt get him shook off my arm. Decided to try and out run him, then i hit the end of the trap chain and down i went, all the while the brown buzz saw still wearin out my coat(i went horse by now and the screaming subsided to a raspy cough).

In the end i won, but by God that little dude earned my repsect for muskrats to this day.
had a similar run in with a small beaver, and all though super strong, pound for pound, my money is on the muskrat.

HB @)
Boomer, the most i have ever got for a put up rat was $2.50
