went for a little ride tonight...
« on: Jan 07, 2011, 09:44 PM »
My buddy called me as i was getting off work to see if i wanted to go fishing. Of course I went, we got out there and set up in my older quickflip 3, heater on, lantern on... and the dang wind picks up, we put up every pole for shack and fish for a while longer (crappie bite was hot) all of a sudden a big gust kicks up and we went for about a 3 foot ride in the shack. We called it quits for the night, didn't want to have the shack get busted up or any of the gear.

when do you call it quits because of the weather?

If you have bare ice why grease it?? My 5'1 120 pound wife pulls ours fully loaded as is but I do have Hyfax.

Hit that sucker with some de-greaser while the ice is bare! Or invest in some ice anchors.

I got out on the ice at 9am this morning and ice tent held well in the light wind since there was snow on the ice. Wind picked up through the day and blew all the snow off the ice. When I moved the ice tent later in the day, I had no snow under the tent so I was blowing all over the place on the ice. Rode it out through the day and caught fish but it was pretty gusty.

pack the slush from your holes around the edge of the tent....i've fished solo in 45 mph winds and stayed put.

I watched a buddy set his Shappell Cabin up - his yellow lab got in and the next thing I know he was chasing both across the ice. That was it - he packed it up. Winds we're brutal that day. Another buddy and I met him down there to fish Palo just before the ice storm of the century came in 3 years ago. We we're in a flip over frabill fortress and could hardly talk with the wind blowing the fabric. To get out of the wind we moved into a cove which ended up being 3 foot of water over sand - lesser of the 2 evils. Never caught a fish. There was so much ice on the roads on the way home that we took gravel and had to ride the crown to stay on the road. Miserable.

I did this in a small 4x8 permie once.  Kinda a rush. Who woulda thunk you could blow a 250lb shack 100 feet on glaze ice. ;)
