West side guys are kinda grumpy.  Never had a problem with the guys on the east side.

Riding over a line is no biggie.  Pulling up a net and cutting it or stealing fish is (its happened).

More than enough fish to go around.  Tell them to take that bunch out of their panties  ;)

It is an offence to steal, tamper or otherwise mess with a commercial fishers operation. First Nations folks also net and their equipment is protected as well. With that said, the commercial boys do not own the lake and thus cannot tell you not to angle near their nets. Common sense on the part of the angler should prevail though.

The netters I have had contact with on L. Manitoba are very friendly. I personally don't feel they as a group that claim to make their income from the lake really care as much about the resource as they claim to. just my opinion though :)

Not that I don't agree in part, but I don't think we can generalize.  After all, what does it say about ice fishers when people leave 5 gallon pails of crap, garbage and burnt ice shacks behind at the end of the season?  Thats right, we can't generalize.

Yes, but I can assure you that those anglers whom leave all kinds of garbage and detritis on the ice after their "activity" don't depend on the natural resource for a part or all of their yearly income. IMO if grain farmers operated in the manner of a lot of commercial fishers on our big lakes, they (the farmers) would not be in business all too long. These are just my personal opinions as I had worked part of my early adult life with the Lake Winnipeg commercial fishery. :)

I commercial fished in my younger days as well out from Balsam Harbour and throughout the south basin. From the early days right up until about 5 years ago you would not have found an angler anywhere in site. open water and ice. Up until last year there was just a handful of anglers around BH and area. Last year was the turn around for the sport fishery on the east side. The commercial fishers are just not used to having to share the lake with so many other people. It is somewhat of a culture shock for them. Also with the bad press from the red river last year has them seeing all of us as disrespectful neighbors. It is just a learning curve for them. They will get used to the crowds that will come as long as it's kept clean. And just in case someone is going to post that they (commercial fishers) leave garbage behind such as fish cleanings, that is legal to do. All that does is feed the wolves, foxes, and birds for the winter. In the spring the seagulls clean anything left behind from the winter. So again it`s all new to them here on the east side. In time they will except the sports fishery and all will be well (:

I don't think the commercial fisherman are upset with people ice fishing.
It has to do with the guy on the ski-doo running over there line. The rope could have been severed or frayed from the skis or track. When they are setting or lifting there nets, and the line breaks. Can cause major hassles.Or if they use it fot there jigger, and the line breaks,,hundreds of gollars gone.
We just have to watch and respect everyone...
Nothing worse than a pissed off neighbor  :)

Very Glad to hear that, That looks good on you,,  You would have got the same reaction if you would have drove over the carpenter's extension cord or the mechanic's trouble light. So we agree this post was never was about the "once again the commercial fisherman being angry with us anglers"  There was no anger by the commercial fisherman at "us anglers" the anger was at you for being careless, you made amends, end of story.  Hope you will be more careful in the future and thank you for doing the right thing,, you makes all of us look better, all is good ,,, Merry Christmas and the Best in the New Year
