Rainy day at Mt. Tom
« on: Jan 02, 2011, 03:56 PM »
We did a short trip out today...the weather made it iffy as to what we were going to do.  It's tough enough trying to explain the concept of standing on the ice fishing to non-fishermen but then add standing in the rain on the ice...well, nevermind...we got out and were glad for it.  We jigged up a handful of panfish and as a little bonus Alex got a pondie for next weekend's outing.  Also, had one flag that made a nice run which Alex took and got himself a nice 15" brown trout.

I didn't do an accurate measurement, had stuck the ice scoop in a hole  on the way out and eyeballed the waterline on the handle, looked to be at least 6".

Went to Mount Tom today for another ars whooping!  8 hours on the ice and only one flag that something snatched the bait off and only pulled off 2' of line. We tried several tactics, shiners, Swedish pimples tipped with mousies or meal worms, some meal worms just on a hook. Rapala jig with above mentioned. There was plenty of ice 6-7" but don't forget your spikes.
Well I had a good time as my son and father came up to fish the afternoon and I met a nice guy who fished across the bay from me and a couple of other people stopped by to check the action. One of them told me that someone caught a 14lb Brown on Sunday and they saw it on the scale.???  Go figure! Time to hit a different lake...I have learned my lesson!

LInebreaker, I guess that a lot times catching the big fish is about being at the right place at the right time.  There were only a handful of guys left on the ice when we left on Sunday and if one of them got a 14 pounder good for them.

Last year we went to Mt. Tom for first ice and got skunked.

Two years ago we went on first ice, no more than three inches, guys were set up with tip ups all around off the beach, water still open in greater part of the lake.  My son and I hadn't begun using tipups yet and just had jigging rods.  We started jigging out in fifteen to twenty feet of water but then I had cut a hole that had very thin ice so I told my son that were moving closer to shore.  I cut a couple of holes in ten feet of water and we were on top of the trout.  Within a couple of hours we had our limit of trout on jigging rods.  The guys with tipups (who weren't getting any action whatsoever)  came around and asked about what the trick was to catch fish.  No trick;right place, right time!

Keep at it and tight lines to you!  See you on the ice!

Mt tom can be tricky, you just have to know where to pop the holes.  The shoreline directly accross from the beach is my favorite area, rarely get skunked there but you have to remind yourself that fishing deep isnt always where they are at.  A majority of trout ive caught there have been in less than 5' of water.
