Hub Style Ice Tent ??
« on: Dec 02, 2010, 06:55 AM »
Wow.  Can't believe I remembered my login & p-word.  Thought it was going to be a hassle & would have to re-register.

Anyway, asking about those hub style tents.  Are they warm enough.  I like the portability of them & size packed away. I also like the size you get for the price.  If I were to get one, I am thinking I would make a wood floor that folds up in half then when out tether the shack to the floor since they have a tendancy to get blown around. I felt the material & it seems to be similar to the flips. I presume it would be warm enough with a wood floor. I'm not going to go that route if they don't hold heat, though.  Any comments?  Thanks.

We have one, it is made by Clam.  We heated it last year with a Big Buddy heater, and yes it does hold heat, and condensation.  We have also used it with no heater, but I have 2 small boys, and they like to fish with their coats off in comfort.  This year I am adding one of the fan light combos the attaches to the roof hub with a Velcro strap, I read that this will cut down on the condensation.  As for the floor, I use a couple of the green military hard foam insulating mats.  We needed 2 for a 6x6 shelter.  You can also get them at Walmart, they are in the camping section, and are blue in color. The foam is insulating, and lighter than plywood, and the kids feet don't get cold when I put those down. If you use the screws in the corners, and pile snow along the skirting, you will have no drafts, and it will not blow around.
My 9 year old son wants to get a Otter Sled, with a flip over top, and a bench seat mounted to the sled for Christmas.    It is time consuming to move a hub shelter and once it is set, we don't.  We drill other holes and the boys come back into the hub to warm up. I agree with my son, and the flip over is at the top of my list.  Fin and Feather in Iowa City had them for $349 on Black Friday, and when I went back to purchase it without the boys on Sunday, they were gone.  I liked it better then the Clams that Scheels in Sioux City has in stock, so hopefully I can find one in Minneapolis / St. Paul over Christmas.  The otter has a heavier material, heavier frame, and the sled is heavier than the one that I have. The benefit to the hub, is that I can lift the packed sled in and out of the back of the truck, alone.  With a flip over, I will need the boys to help lift it into the truck, or have to unload the sled to do it alone.  Now I need to replace my old Eskimo Gas auger with a lighter one...This is more expensive than hunting :)

I have the eskimo quickfish 3 and it's worked awesome
Sets up on seconds and is very mobile, only had one rod break one time and they sent a replacement and had it installed a day later.

I have the Frabill predator flip over style and love it, it heats good and tons of room, but......it is a little heavy if you gotta drag up a hill. You can't beat a flip style if you move around alot.

I bought a hub style ground blind last year to take my son and wife deer hunting.  I got the predator den.  3 days after season started there was a blizzard and I couldn't get out of my house for the rest of the season.  When I did finally get out I found my blind with over 2 feet of snow on it.  The top collapsed in but otherwise it was fine.  I used it as a fishing shack the rest of the winter.  I did not have a floor and used the smaller heat budy to heat it.  My 4yr son came with 1 day and got hot enough that he wanted to take off his coat.  Hopefully I'll find time to make a floor this year.  It will make staking it down a lot easier.

Take a look at the new hubs that glens outoors are offering.  I got one and everyone i've seen here has liked them.  They are very cheap and Glen's is offering free shipping for Iceshanty members!

Yes.  I've been looking at the Glen's 3 man hut at Glen's & they have some nice features.  I have it narrowed down to one of the Glen's or the Eskimo from Glens.  Both are 149.50. I like that there are grommets on the inside of the tent with the Eskimo. I've seen the Glen's style at other internet sites under a different name (I.E. Black Ice). They have a hook in the ceiling hub but I don't think it could tolerate too much weight before it would collapse so I don't think a very heavy light or lantern could be hung from it. I also like the larger windows in the Glen's but not if you get more of a draft with them. I understand the Eskimo's windows have or had a tendancy to crack in really cold temps.  I don't know if they have alleviated this issue over the years.  I will have to check.

I also have concerns about service if a pole should break or something else. Wondering if going with a more well know brand like Eskimo might be better if need parts or customer service. I want a company that is going to be around down the road.

Just placed an order for the Glen's Elite Series 3.  $149.95 straight-up.  No tax or shipping!  Can't beat that deal for the square footage & excellant reviews it has had & I was told should be here in 2-3 days.

I have done a ton of research on hub styles. I used to own a 4 man style from HT that was excellent. I sold it to a friend and havent been able to find a replacement. I just recently ordered the 3-man hub from Glens Army/Navy. What sold it for me was the features (2 doors, similarity to the eskimo, and the price, free shipping didnt hurt either). I have not received it yet but it should be here in a couple days. Thank you guys for posting about this product, that is what sealed my decision. When it arrives I will post my findings, which Im sure will be favorable :)

This is what I went with this year.  I have a solo fish trap that I use when it's just me but the hub style works great with my son, dad and I.  The Glen's Elite Series is really nice.  I like that it has two doors, 600 denier, accessory hook and accessory pouches on all sides.  It really is easy to set up and take down.  I would recommend them to anyone looking for a nice hub style.  The shipping was super fast too.
