Giant Carp Through Ice
« on: Mar 15, 2011, 01:53 PM »
My friend Alex caught this carp with some help. He was jigging spikes for perch. Took him 45 minutes and had to drill multiple holes side by side to get him up.

I held it up for these pictures so I wanted to make sure I wasn't taking credit for it. He was using 4# test. This was in upstate NY. We guess between 38 and 42# based on others we have accidentally caught in the same area. Was very disappointing when we realized what it was but guess it is still pretty cool through the ice. The amount of excitement and anticipation when you don't know what is on the end of the line is one of the best feelings in the world. We spent 45 minutes guessing what it might be. Very fun.

Way to go, that's one bruiser of a carp. @)

That's one fish I would like to try through the ice but have never even seen one on camera let alone hook one. ::)

What was the approximate depth and area of lake {IE- current, rocks, weeds, wood, sand etc..} you guys found it? ???

This is a sheltered bay off of Lake Ontario. Maximum depth is 10' but it is a shallow saucepan like bay. most of the deepest water is 5-7'. This was caught in about 5-6' of water. The bottom is mostly mucky with some gravel shoreline. This was caught near the middle over the muddy/mucky bottom. No current to speak of.

Neat, thanks for the info FastEddie1982. :)

Once the open water season opens for you that would be a great
early season spot for the carp.
