Strikemaster sells an auger blade sharpener for like $8. Not sure how well they work but for $8 you can sharpen your own anytime you need to.

That sharpener sucks.  I used to have a strikemaster lazer and used that on it when it got dull, and it sucked.  Then I got a nils, way better!!

From my experience, none of the sharpeners work all that well. Just buy new blades.

I bought one of the small blue handled shapeners at Gander and use it on my 4 1/2 " fin bore manual and 6" Nils/ Tenaca power auger. If you go slow and don't roll the edge it works well. I keep pressure on it for more cut and so far have done very well. I am still on my original Nils head and I bought one of the first ones in the state about 10 years ago. I dulled the Nils up in a dirt hole and it was cutting like crap. One of my fishing buds had one of the hand held sharpeners and let me try it out and the thing cut like butter. I did ruin a 5" Mora manual I had though before I knew how to sharpen. After you roll the edge there isn't any sharpening the unit. Best at that point to just buy a new set of blades.

I have never had luck with those hand sharpeners. Back home i knew a hardware store that used to sharpen them for like 7 bucks. I was hoping there was a place around here that was like that. I guesse I will just have to bite the bullet and get a new set. Is there any where around that sells 8inch mora blades for a decent price?

Fish307.com has an exchange program where you send them your old blades and they will send back sharpened blades. turn around is fairly quick.  Cheaper  than new blades. If you want your own blades back they will sharpen them and send them back, takes longer. Look for their add on the top of the page.

Yeah, I have heard fish307 is a pretty good deal.  It only costs a fraction of the price of new blades to get them sharpened.

You can resharpen your blades using chrome polish and a dremel. It's a technique I learned from someone who posted it here a few years back.  Click on my profile....click on view all post....see post #17 for all the details. It's easy and it works.

Does the dremel method still work if the is a small nick in the blade?

I was able to copy and paste.....here's how you do it.

You can sharpen hand auger blades to like new condition yourself very easily.  I actually learned the technique on this website and it WORKS!

If your auger blades have not been damaged or the original blade angle not been altered, try this technique.

Use a good chrome polish with a Dremel white buffing pad.  Put a small dab of chrome polish on the buffing pad and buff the TOP EDGE ONLY of each auger blade, using a high speed on the Dremel.  Be sure not to let the pad slip over the edge.  Buff for 3-4 minutes for each blade, adding a bit more chrome polish if necessary.  This will hone the blade to an edge that will cut as good as new blades.  If you repeat this after each day you use the auger, your blades will stay in new condition.  It takes less than 5 minutes.  Try it, you'll never throw away another set of undamaged blades.

If the blade is damaged with a nick or you have tried to sharpen them and changed the original blade angle, you can restore the blade using a dremel sharpening stone bit.  Take an adjustable carpenter square and get the angle from a good set of blades.  Then hone the blades back to the correct angle using the adjustable square.  If you have a nick in the blade, just file off the nick and use the above technique

Yes...just grind off the nick with a dremel stone first...then use the chrome polish
