Perch Fishing on Gull lake.
« on: Dec 27, 2010, 08:11 PM »
I was thinking on going down to gull lake when the ice gets safe to fish smelt .
My question is hows the perch fishing in the lake if we decided to go down mid day.
If so, what part of the lake? thanks

Ive caught some dinks but nothing worth keeping. Everyone ive talked to says the pan fishing isnt worth much...by the way the ice is safe for smelt...
I caught a fish once!

Never had any luck with the perch in Gull. But there are some bull gills in there.
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

I've caught gills from Gull but have yet to catch a bull gill. Caught a few of various beds in the spring and I think the biggest gill I have ever caught out there is about 8.5 inches....I heard it use to be good years ago before they planted the atlantic salmon in there. I do occasionaly catch a good perch out of gull but for the most part it is dink city.

My buddies dad has two stringers of perch that he had mounted.  They were all taken in one outing on Gull back in the late 70's or early 80's.  I know this because I was in high school at the time.  There is a dozen perch on the two stringers and they are all 12 and 13 inchers plus.  Perhaps the Atlantic Salmon did have an effect, but if memory serves me correctly, they were planting salmon back then as well.

Gull is a huge lake.  Good luck finding them.

It was a great Perch lake back in the pre 70s early 80s era, once the Salmon were put in it everything was running scared, hard to find, smaller and less of them. Used to do very well in and around the submerged islands in the North central part of it. Perch of 12, 13 and some over 15 happened, seen (never caught) 'gills over 12 but 10s where fairly common, did ice a 16" Crappie. Have no idea why the DNR decided to screw it up with Salmon, haven't even considered fishing it in over 20yrs and it's only 15 minute away. 200+ Smelt in a couple hours was normal. From reading the threads it sounds as if it's coming back some but nowhere near where it was
