ice conditions
« on: Dec 20, 2010, 05:25 PM »
mallets bay is 80% locked up all the way to the broad lake, still large spots of open water, will be 2-3 weeks before is safe to fish way out, sandbar is only frozen maybe 350 yards from. access to open water. Couple people fishing out there today, but not much action. Keelers bay is only frozen a couple hundred yards out, people out fishing the south side of the bay. Looks like without a cold snap gonna be a while before there is good ice. Carry bay is locked up tight to the point of the tounge all the way out. I went out about a half mile and still had 5.5 inches of solid ice, with about 2 inches on top. Drilled about 15 holes with a hand auger with dull blades. Cant remember 5.5 inches taking so long to drill through, feel the burn! But was a good burn. After 3 hours and only a couple bites, and nothing landed decided to call it quits. Tried using maggots, halis, and bibbits but no luck. Heard panfishing was slow there the last couple days, i d say bait fish havent moved in quit yet. Northerns could be slow in this case, well hopefully things turn around soon but was nice to get out on the ice at least before christmas!
