I saw the Strikemaster Mora 7" at BPS in Auburn for $40 last Sunday, that's the regular price.  It's the blue colored one, not the black one (I think that is the Lazer and more expensive)

Have you tried to retrieve the one that went in the drink? Know anyone with a camera?

5 or 6" is perfect for panfish. 6" if you have a vexilar (due to the float). Check out Bass pro shops new line of augers, they say they are pretty good.

Depending on your area, a pawn shop may have one or even a Goodwill. A few calls and you never know. I would get some overtime and buy a Lazer or more overtime and buy a Nils. I understand your situation but if you get desperate you can use an axe. If you lived closer to me I would give you an old blue Mora. Hope you find one soon.

I just took a look at the BPS Auger and while the price is good they didn't seem to have replacement blades for it anywhere on there website. It would really suck to buy an auger and not be able to get blades for it...

Capedeer/fish is right, cheap does not = good with hand augers. But in your case, if you were satisfied with the mora you had you obviously should get another mora if that is all you can afford.

I would also love to hear the story, however, I think I'd be finding a buddy with a camera, buy a high strength magnet and some rope.  Unless you lost it in some strong current, I'm thinking it shouldn't be all that hard to get it back.

So, whats the beef with the so called "Cheap" Mora's?
I have had one for 20+ years, works  perfect
Please don't tell me snobs have gotten into ice fishing,
 they've already wrecked fly fishing

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but ice fishing is full of snobs, just take a look at the equipment board.

A cheapie could be the way to go if you only need one or two seasons (tops) out of it. Sometimes it's the sensible way to go when you're on a tight budget. It took me a LOT of years to build up a decent arsenal of gear. I could only use a spud bar for many years before I realized the luxury of a real auger.

I have used a Mora (Strike Master) for several years with no issues.  It is only a 6".  Recently purchased the Bass Pro 8" for 39.95  Looks to me as they use the Mora blades when I compared a set of my Mora's to the BPS they matched in the style just slightly smaller.    Watch for the sales.  I see Cabela's ice fishing all went 25% off in stock merchandise.

Not everyone on this site is drilling the same amount of ice. Most don't have issues with bad augers or should I say inferior to the best. My area of fishing we can find men still using the old spoon augers. Some will use an axe with a couple of good swings and they are fishing. As you travel to other areas the ice becomes thicker and then the so called Mora isn't quite good enough comes into play. I can tell you I have drilled several holes with an eight inch Mora through 2 foot of ice. Thinking all the way through there has to be a better way. I now use an Icegator with a Lazer bit, only because of traveling to the thicker ice regions. The other thing is some like to swiss cheese the lake. A Mora would be difficult using it for more than a few holes. Be honest, I know someone will say they drill a thousand holes with their Mora every time out, but not me.

I have used a Mora 8" for a few years.
The very first thing I did was send the Chinese blades in to Fish 307 for an exchange and bought Swedish blades.
There is no comparison between the Chinese and Swedish blades.
I found a brand new 8" Lazer on ebay for $80 delivered to my doorstep.
I will be using it for the first time this afternoon.
There was nothing too wrong with my Mora (it was getting dull again...)
I used to drill my 5 tip up holes, then one for jigging and stayed in the same place.
My fishing style has changed and I need to drill a lot more holes.
I couldn't see myself drilling lots and lots of holes with the Mora.
After doing a lot of research, I settled on the Lazer...the Nils seems to be better...for a LOT more bread.
Check out ebay....you never know, Craigslist is another place I have scored some good deals.
Good luck, I would send you my Mora but my son has his eye on it....

The story is i was taking a buddy ice fishing for the first time wenesday morning so we get down on the lake a little after 7 start drilling a hole and the handle is a little short so I take the bolt out to raise it out buts it frozen right then my mom calls me and talks to me i forgot to put the bolt back in and right as I went to raise it out of the hole there it went right back down the hole.

I just bought a 5" mora from sportsmans for $40.95 shipped to my door. Now I have an auger to hand to my buddy when he wants to go look for fish. Mora blades are a lot cheaper to replace than lazer when he screws it up. LOL

I have a 6" Mora and it works great. Last weekend I made an attachment to connect to my cordless drill. Drilled a couple dozen holes on one battery through 8" inches of ice and still had more juice. This was faster than my Jiffy. Talk about light and quick ( and stealth ).
