Small Grills
« on: Dec 05, 2010, 03:56 PM »
hey guys, I'm looking for a smaller grill to take out on the ice with me. I have to put everything in my sled, and it can get bulky. I want something that will grill a few hot dog or hamburgers, and uses those 1lb propane cylinders. The one I have now isn't the heaviest, It is a tailgater grill from Dicks Sporting goods, but i was wondering if there was something smaller. I did a search and didn't really come up with what I was looking for.

Kmart or maybe sears i think they are together now. Have a small grill that uses 1 lb propane tanks. I think they were under 30 bucks. might be hard this time of year to find though

Target has one just like it for under $30. I've been looking around too and it seems to go from tailgater size to backpacker size. Try googling Coleman single burner.

I have the coleman small propane grill.  It is small breaks down and has a carrying bag. It is propane and works great!  I can fry a few burgers on it when we have a group of people on the ice or I can cook a pot of soup on the top as well. It is very versatile!

Thanks guys, Those grills are pretty much the same size and weight as mine. I'd like one about half that size...Just don't know if they make one.

Does it have a cover?  I did not see one in the ads.

It is actually the Coleman Roadtrip Party Grill.  It is propane, and it is very small.  It doesn't have a cover, just the grill.....but it works great!

Suggest you Google "Camping Equipment" or "Backpacking Stoves"   There are many very small stoves that backpackers use based on their smalll size.
Now that I've said that:  We've been using a small charcoal BBQ grill with removeable legs for the last forty years.  We fill it with charcoal and place it in two plastic bags tied at the top.  Just need to carry a small bottle of starter fuel.  The whole thing weighs less than 2 lbs.  Think about it.....REAL Charcoal Grilled flavor.  You can probably buy one anywhere for less than $10 bucks.

I use the Coleman camp stove.  While it may look bulky when it is set up, it folds up really small and some come with the leather carrying case that folds down to like 3 inches wide and takes up very little space on my sled.  We go down to the local meat market and buy fresh Brats...mmmmmmmm.
Below the radar.  Under the glass.

i have been using my msr whisperlite. its been my backpackers stove for years and packs in a little carry back. the bottle with fuel and stove weighs next to nothing and fits into my small ice bag with some cans of stew or chilli. brings water to a roiling boil too for coffee and tea. wouldn't go into the woods or on the ice for an all day venture without it. they can be had cheap on ebay.check them out. the international version is a multi-fuel. mine isnt that version but i have used white gas, unleaded petrol, and 91% isoprol alcohol. seriously, its worth looking into. nothing beats a hot meal in the cold to keep ya motivated.

I have the little Weber and love it. It's pretty tight so I don't get a lot of grease flair ups, and the push start is nice to have on a small table top grill. Cleans up nice too.

Coleman Single Mantel Propane Lantern.  In my one man shanty, it's my heat, it's my light and it's my cook stove. Anything wrapped in tinfoil is what's for dinner (lunch?) A slab of meatloaf with barbeque sauce heated up and dropped on a toasted (on the lantern) hardroll is first choice. A precooked burger patty or piece of fried chicken in tinfoil works too. Worst case scenario, is a coupple of hotdogs in tinfoil. I couldn't imagine dragging along a propane grill just to heat up lunch.
