Eskimo auger cutting out on hi revs
« on: Nov 22, 2010, 10:47 AM »
got an older eskimo with tecumseh (sp) 24:1 ratio, starts on about 5th pull
over the years i can't run it without a little bit of choke on, or else it will just stop at hi-revs. also from idle if you hit the gas arm quick it just stops. if i leave a bit of choke on it runs fine
is this a lean condition?
i have played around with needle valve.  seat it, turn out until it starts to run poorly and then turn it in 1/2 turn.

any tune up instrauctions

thanks for any replies

Sound like it needs to have the carb rebuilt. Sounds like it has progressivly getting worse.

I agree I would rebuild the carb. Over the years the diaphram and other parts that require flexability gets stiff. I would also replace the spark plug after the rebuild. Its also worth switching to a more modern syntheitc oil and leaning out the mix ratio also.

This is for a jiffy you have the same motor not sure about your carb though.
Left screw (small screw)= low idle. Gently seat the screw and back it out 1 1/8 turns.
Right screw(big screw) = high speed. Gently seat the screw and back it out 5/8 - 3/4 turn.

Just note how many turns to seat the screws. That way if it don't work for your auger at least your back to square one.

A few years ago i rebuilt the carb on my model 30, parts only cost about $10.00.
I reccomend you try those settings and if it don't work pick up a needle and seat and diaphragm.

it could also be that it wasn't "summerized" properly and there's some gooky fuel/varnish in there. try spraying a good blast of carb cleaner, pull it over a few times with the plug wire off, and then let it soak overnight. otherwise, tear it apart and put in the new parts. it's cheap insurance to know that you did it right.

This is usually the result of a lean condition. Other contributing factors are dirty needle/seat, (varnish from poor gas/oil)
pinhole in the diaphragm, fouled plug. Make sure your plug gap is correct; too wide a gap will give you a good idle, but cut out on top end...reverse is true, narrow gap will cause poor idle. Sounds like you need a good cleaning, carb kit, and plug. Some non-oxy gas with proper oil mix, and you should be good to go.  :)

Do you have any local small engine shop that services tecumseh? I would call them.

Lots of rebuild kits for that engine. As mentioned, any small engine shop can order you one. And...Bosch plugs don't do well in that engine.

Once you getting running right again swtich to Amsoil Saber pro at a 70 or 80:1 mix, your auger will thank you.

You might want to use some Sea Foam in your gas also. It does a good job of cleaning your fuel system out and keeping it clean. The Amsoil Saber Professional oil is good for you engine also.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.
