Has anyone made their own rods?
« on: Nov 14, 2010, 09:39 PM »
As I sit here stuck in Texas with no chance to fish I have been thinking about things to keep me busy when I get home.  I have been thinking about giving rod building a shot (as if I really need another hobby).  Has anyone here tried making their own rods?  I know that we have a forum dedicated to rod building but I was wondering if anyone in SD has done it that I might be able to go to for help and direction if needed.

I haven't. I know a guy in Redfield here who has made some. He showed them to me and they are really nice. Next time I see him I'll have to ask him how he goes about it. He had a few ice Rods, open face rods, and bait-casting rods.

In my research I have heard that doing a full sized rod is actually quite a bit easier than an ice rod just because an full sized rod is more rigid and easier to wrap.  That is my plan as well and then if I enjoy it and feel like doing more I will get into the ice rods.

I buy at Cabelas, some of rods that have been cut that people have brought back. They have a barrel with hundreds of rod ends. I check out the stiffness of the rod for what I am going to icefish for. I buy my handles off of eBay and the reels to. I have some of the greatest setups that $6.00 can buy. Kinda like reloading your own shells, you know exactly what you have got.    Jerry

i will actually be doing that same thing, except I will be using the tip of a fly rod to make an UL rod.  I can get a handle for 4 dollars, and I have a reel.  sounds good to me

just got done making 3 of my own - i think starting with a summer rod would be easier to start because the guides would be typically bigger...now i just need a drying motor to epoxy mine and then hopefully safe ice for a fat guy in a couple weeks!
