Using buckets to fill gap between shack and ice
« on: Nov 17, 2010, 03:49 PM »
I am planning on building a shack on a boat trailer and it won't be able to crank down. Has anyone used 5 gallon buckets with the bottoms cut out to fill the gap between the shack and the ice? If you have could you post pictures? Any help is appreciated.
Tight lines and safe fishing.

I had a shack that was on skis, and the top of the floor was 12" to the top of the ice.
I cut a hole in the floor so the bucket rim (where the handles attach) would not go through the
hole.  I needed a second bucket under the shack to make to the ice.

Helps stop drafts, etc. but my next shack will sit on the ice while in use.  It will then be up on skis or a trailer when not in use.

My coroplast shack floor was just a couple inches from the ice.  I cut bucket holes, but didn't need them
most of the time.

You might find some sort of plastic piping (culvert diameter) to use instead.

I used a 12" HVAC duct, because my shack sits so high off the ice, and I hate it.  Not because the sleeve doesn't serve it's purpose, but pulling a fish through 24" of sleeve before it hits the floor of the shack sucks, lost a few nice crappies in the process. >:(

I have a buddy that does city sewer and water. He got me some 12" sewer pipe and we cut it so the flange sat on the floor. Kinda heavy duty but works great.

I used 10" heavy schedule PVC pipe in mine. I fished that way for about eight years and lost very few fish between the ice and the floor.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Here's a website that has stuff for your Shack.

http://www.fishhousesupply.com

You can find just about anything to trick out the inside of your shack.

Hope this helps,

I use 5 gal pails used a router to get the hole exactly the size of the top of the pail. When its real cold and the line or the bait touch the side of the pail it will freeze to it I usually pile the ice chips up on the inside to help seal to the ice level
