Fly Reel on ice rod
« on: Nov 11, 2010, 08:42 PM »
Question anyone use these for ice fishing ?  Seen the guy on IDO using one. He said the drags are better and you get zero line twist because the line comes off straight. Any thoughts about this.

Hey man, check this link out, there is already a lengthy discussion on this topic. I bought my first fly reel for ice fishing as a result of it

Fly reels with good drags are costly.  Generally you don't get them until you pretty much start paying over a $100.  Maybe things have changed.  You will still get line memory coils, but it's almost unnoticeable from the larger spool.  Compared to your ultralight spinning reels, it is like no line memory coil twists.

One of the best advantage to a fly reel is sensitivity.  You've got your hand/finger on the line and you can feel how you're jigging and when a fish bite.  Of course if you're hand/fingers are too cold and numb it's gonna be hard to tell or if you're fishing too deep it's harder to tell.

Most of all, it's fun and brings another dimension to ice fishing.  Or rather return of a old style of ice fishing.
