Bait Tank Filtration Upgrade
« on: Nov 04, 2010, 04:39 AM »
I upgraded my 30 gallon Rubbermaid holding tank to a 100 gallon stock tank. I just used an aquarium filter and air stones for the smaller one, but since I will be moving more water I need a larger filter to move the water, I'll still use my air stones I guess. What type of filter can I use to move 100 gal.....What do you guys use on your larger tanks?

You'll want a canister filter, 4 tray with around 300gph. FNE will probably chime in with some quality input.

Why how did you know?  ;D

I have a magnum 350 canister filter on my 100 gallon tank. They are on sale at Dr. Fosters right now.

It doesn't have the 4 tray that Mark mentioned but I've had it for several seasons and it works great. You can save additional money by buying a filter pad and cutting it to size rather than buying the sleeves that work on the 350.

Call me if you have any questions Sir!!

We have 2, 150 gallon tanks and we are using Cascade 1000 filters on them. They are the 3 tray design and change 400 gph. Don't even need the stone with it. 129.00 at petco.

Ifya don`t wanna spend the cake on the canisters, ya can always grab a submersible pond pump(Lowes, etc) and pump to a filter basket or a kitty litter container that cascasdes back into tank. I have a sub. 550gph pump that pumps from a 55 gallon drum to a 35 gallon drum over it , that then cascades thru a basket filter with fiberglass insulation for media back into the 55. You can see my setup here--->http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=118411.0 Scroll down to mid-page.
550GPH pump cost me $55, total setup less than $150. I have an easy $300 worth of bait in them now, at today`s prices!

My pump moves 550gph at a third of the price. That was the point I was making. Are the canister filters better? I`m sure they are , but for my use, I`ll spend the short money and leave myself $100 for icegear. The reason I trap my own bait and store it for later use is to save money, so I can afford other gear or simply the gas to go. Besides watta ya need a $150 filter/pump ifya can`t trap nuttin anywayz Mark?   ;)2 ;)2 :roflmao:

No worries guys. I'm used to the ribbing, this isn't the only site where I get it either.  :o

I have a bunch of frozen gold from last year Bob, I should be all set. I'm planning on buying a few lbs. of shiners at the beginning of December if the trapping doesn't pick up. I'll be ok.
