earth to ice auger???
« on: Oct 06, 2010, 02:12 PM »
So this is a new topic but kind of an old question.   I have the motor of an older Tecumsah gas auger, that is origionally intended to be used as an earth auger.  From what I gather earth augers (for the most part) spin the opposite direction of most gas ice augers.

Are there any ice auger bits that can be purchased that would be able to be paired with this type of motor?

My quick check of Jiffy's web site shows that many of Jiffy's motors are in fact Tecumsah, however in the FAQ section it states that these earth auger motors and jiffy ice bits are not interchangable.

The question is...  Does anyone know of an ice bit that will adapt to this type of motor/rotation, and will be able to fit on the motor pictured below?

If not, am I just better off buying a new auger?

And Lastly if it seems that this earth auger cant be used for ice fishing,  Does anyone want a used earth auger with two different earth bits for real cheap???    Personally I am not much of a mechanic, but I figure maybe someone more mechanically inclined could do something with this set up.

Thanks -Joe

I had a Stihl earth auger I made an adapter for and used it on the ice for a couple years, if you can come up with the right bit I don't see why you couldn't use it.

Check the rotation, Jiffy spins counterclockwise, Strikemaster is clockwise. not sure about the other augers.  once you get a bit with the right rotation, you chould be able to take both pieces to a welding shop and have them make a connector piece.  As long as the motor runs good, the flighting will cost about $120 and i cant imagine it would cost more than $50 to have a piece made.  new auger on average is $400, so might be worth it  ???

I think you have a decent idea and could make it work with things that are available but before I dumped a bunch of coin on this project I would consider the following things: It looks heavy if you have to carry/drag it under man power. Might want to check the rpms against ice augers that might make it less handy for ice drilling. Not here to rain on your parade but I find myself in the predicaments from time to time and I would be a lot better off if I were smart enough to ask about it and spend my money to get the right tool for the job. I can build a lot of stuff but it takes a bunch of time and labor to carry out all of the ideas I can dream up. Some things just can't be bought the way I want them so I'll build it but others have been perfected by other and I'm happy to shell out for them. JMHO
