New Shanty, Need opinions
« on: Sep 29, 2010, 03:28 PM »
Looking at getting a new shanty and want some input. I want it to be big enough for two guys. I think ive narrowed it down to two. Frabil and otter. Thanks

Frabil-$349.99 http://www.frabill.com/portable-ice-shelters/flip-over-shelters/6120.html

Otter-$369.99 http://www.otteroutdoors.com/portablefishhouses.html

I don't believe the Otter price includes the sled, so for the money the Frabil would be my choice.  That said, the Otter sleds are nearly indestructible with runners on.

Hey ShawnB, here's a photo of my 9 year old Frabil XL Twin. I have used her hard for those nine years and all I've done is put some runner stock on the bottom to protect it ! They make a great Portable !

I had a Fragile once, the fabric didn't last 2 trips, then I paid for something that has done quite a number of trips, most behind a snowmobile driver that doesn't show a lot of mercy.  An Otter 2 man, nice deep sled, comfy seating and material that doesn't resemble cheap pantyhose.

I also have an older Frabill XLT and have been using it for around seven years with no problems. The big problem for me now that I'm retired and have to deal with a bad shoulder is loading it into my pickup. I think I'm going to switch to a pop up/ hub type shelter since they are much lighter. I also pull my XLT behind my ATV when the snow isn't two feet deep on our lakes. I guess you may want to decide how hard you are going to beat it and go from there. I take care of my equipment because I want it to last, but at my age I'm not near as active on the ice as I used to be. I actually enjoy being in my dropdown house and taking a nap on the bunk when the fishing is slow.   :woot:  ;)
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I got the Trekker DLX from Gander. Its simialar to the Trekker II but has nicer seats, thicker fabric, and comes with the travel cover. It's great bc I can fish by myself and have no problems loading or unloading it from the suburban but its big enough so I can bring someone else with and we both have plenty of room. Overall I'm very happy with it

I have been a Clam owner for years and love them.  My father and brother each have Frabill Trekker II's and they are nice tents but not built as well as the Clam product.  For the money they are nice but I'm a firm believer in you pay for what you get.
