Clearing holes
« on: Feb 15, 2011, 10:00 AM »
So what's the secret to clearing holes inside your shanty? Right now I use a hand auger to drill the hole. A scoop and a bucket to clear the slush. There has got to be a better way though?
What about all the guys with the really nice shacks, how do you keep your floor from getting soaked and all that? Just looking for some idea's here.

I use a Slush Bucket to catch the shavings and a Slush Inhaler to clear the hole afterwards.

cut the bottom of 5 gallon buckets and glue them together and they will catch the ice shavings then scoop them to another bucket to throw out the door

I scoop the slush from the hole into a metal bucket and place it on the wood stove. Then when the waters good and hot I pour some down the holes to clear up any slush and on the floor of the shack to get any of the ice that has formed. It works pretty good.

we cut big square holes in ours and use the small net we land our fish with to clear the ice out and a smaller net with small holed mesh netting to scoop the slush out. can get the whole thing in about 5 swipes.

I use a shovel and a large pail. I shovel up the shavings from the floor and put them into the bucket. To clear the hole I use a device from tackle tamer that you push down past the shavings in the hole and when you lift it back up it closes so you can lift out a large column of chips. Then I dump that in the pail also.

Really nice for keeping the slush off the floor isn't it? My son gave me one a few years ago and he even uses it in my portable.

jsut thought of this article i read yrs ago,,,an old timer got sick of clearing his hole so he took a cofee can and wound small diam  cooper tube inside,,coiled,,then brought one end down the outside  of the can,,,long enough to reach down in the hole,,,,thought he was nuts,,never tried it,,,he then filled the can w/charcoal,,lit one brickette, and would fish,,,he said the heat awas absorbed down the copper tube and kept his hole slush free for the day....sounds like a neat and cheap idea BUT you need to make sure you have some fresh air coming in or the carbon monoxide will  or could kill you,,,,you guys just happened to jog that outa me,,,,if any one tries it let me know.....i have another one ,,,scouts used for cooking...made out of coffee cans,,some small holes,,,house insulation anddenatured alcohol,,,burns so clear you can't see flames,,and cooks great.....good luck ...be safe...

I use a Slush Bucket to catch the shavings and a Slush Inhaler to clear the hole afterwards.
I just bought one of these yesterday at Scheels on sale for $23. I use a 10" Eskimo auger, and my auger cleans the hole perfectly, BUT, I fill it all back in with slush, as I rake the area level with my boot before I scoop out with a ladle. I can tell this is going to be a real time saver using this, PLUS, my carpet will now stay dry, as I won't have to lay my roll on wet ice, before I pop up my hub shelter. My brand is Ice Auger Slush bucket by Fish Hole Buddy Products.
