converting a 16'hard shell
« on: May 05, 2010, 03:39 PM »
I was given 16' hard shell camper and plan on using this as an ice house. Before I get to involved with this I would like some input. The roof is leaking on a caved in corner. My solution to this is to remove the roof completely and use those thin steel 2x 4s. Next Im going to wrap the roof with flat roof one piece rubber. I plan to install crank down axles with the axles being on the outside of the shell and fabricating the fender/wheel well. the inside will be gutted with the exception of the heater and possibly some of the overhead cabinets. I will be rewiring for both 120 and 12v. I will more than likely make a drop hitch as well. I would like info on drop axles mainly purchase vs. fabricate my own and where to find plans or if someone has them. If someone has experience with this type of build or is aware of any possible pit falls your info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks mightly in advance

First off welcome to ice Shanty. Just a suggestion if you have not already looked through the Ice Shacks forum pay it a visit. There are many posts/threads on shack construction with pictures.
We love to see photos of your build in progress here on Ice Shanty. So please keep the membership updated on your build.

Hazzy....did you look at the Memorial Day updates?  NHTroutfisherman is coming up in a few weekends to do some open water fishing with Chiefbush and myself. NHTF and I will be formulating build plans at this time also!

I am ready for the deck but I am undecided whether or not to go 7'w or extend the trailer to 8'w. I am not sure the 6" on either side will make much of a weight diffierence.

Whats the max width including tires you can drag down the road around there? Seen a lot of Ice Castles around here way too wide and were getting coupons from the state police, now the Ice castles have an identation so the shack and wheels are about the same width.....
