My 1st catfish on the ice
« on: Mar 08, 2010, 11:19 PM »
March 8th, 2010

Fished from 10:30a – 1:45p
Bait used: medium shiners
Tackle used: #12 and #10 treble hooks with 6# and 8# mono leaders
Method: set bait 1’- 2’ off bottom
Other: flasher, 4# mono, mousies, black marmish jig
Temp. 40 – 50 with slight 5 – 10 mph winds

Ice condition: 14” thick, poor condition super soft on the top and bottom, shoreline run offs are taking there toll.

It was great to have a fun day chasing flags and using the tipups again. The flags started flying high as I was setting the 4th. Got a perch for Lady to start the day.

Next will be a few nice hit and run bass, love to see the spools turning when you get there.

Lady helping the 2nd bass back into the hole.

Then we ending up getting the largemouths cousin.

I guess with all the bass caught, that spring is around the corner. And in taking to the bait guy this morning, it seems as this past weekend and this one coming will be the big slow down until some open water opens ups. April and trout season is around the corner. But back to ice fishing… The only thing I could get to hit the jig pole was fallfish. I had a few other nice sized lookers but no takers. Only fall fishshsh.

Then after a long flag dry spell, FLAG!!!!!
I get there and the spool is turning nice, I open trap and pull out, slight pull back and the battle was on. Finally get to my bobber marker, only another 22 feet, then the swivel to my 5’ mono leader. Yea right, not ready, back down to my bobber. It was a while before I could keep it too the 5’leader. Let me just say that it was a tough job to get the head turned to come up a 6” hole with such a hard square head. That is right, my 1st catfish on the ice and it was an awesome battle.

And to end the day as I started the day, another perch.

It was on awesome day as you can see. Several other bass and fallfish were caught and released. You know it’s a good day if you have over 50% of your tipups up needing bait due to c&r’n another fish to fight again.
