Final Eyes
« on: Mar 16, 2010, 10:28 AM »
Season ended last night at midnight, wanted to finish strong. Friday was one of the best nights of the year, the weather was lousy Saturday and Sunday. The weather finally improved Monday, barometer was rising, New moon phase.

Finally hooked into a nice one jigging right after sundown; didn't have my headlamp on and promptly lost the fish in the hole, rapala came flying out.

Had one flag around 8pm, went up again at 9pm with an 18" female. Things slowed down after that, but with the New moon I was expecting the bite to pick up as midnight approached. Around 11pm the same tip up went up again; no fish, I moved another one closer to this area and moved the others shallower, only one hour left. Tipup I moved closer caught a 21" male at 11:38pm; one I moved shallower caught another male, 22", at 11:47pm; last flag at 11:56pm, was taking line good when I got there, swivel got caught at the bottom of the hole(happens with late ice) and I lost another good one at the hole, 11:58pm. ;D

Last half hour double:

Last flag just went up:

Friday night had great weather, warm with no wind. Had little action by 7:30pm, lost a small one jigging at dusk, decided to move one tipup shallower, it was up pretty soon.

7:42pm

Moved the rest of my tipups shallower right after landing the fish; had two flags go up around 8:15pm, they were about 50 yds apart.

Had one tipup get hit a couple times after that, lost a nice one around 10pm; noticed this tipup was a couple feet shallower than the rest, so I moved the others accordingly. One tipup produced a female and a male about 5 minutes apart and I was done by 10:45pm.

Awesome play by play JJ. That's how you catch fish. Work, work, work. WTG!

I'm impressed to  say the least. Those fish look very healthy / girthy for their lengths. I hope you have an armed guard at your house to keep people from breaking in to take those fillets when you're  not home  ::).

You wrung out every last minute or second of the open season - everybody has to respect that.

Superb, impeccable, awww heck just one great season with the eye's. Someday I'm going to catch one and try it.
All the stories I read about how much fun they are to catch and how good they eat is making me want to target them a bit.
