Ice conditions Orford setback?
« on: Mar 08, 2010, 04:00 PM »
Anyone been out on the river the last few days?  If so hows the ice holding up?  I would really like to get out on the river for some crappie.

I haven't walked down there but I live right in Fairlee and driving by it doesn't look very good. I know people have still been fishing the horseshoe in Piermont but with the looks of things they have bigger balls then I do.

I didn't fish Orford this year as I heard it was pretty slow and didn't feel like wasting my time but I normally fish there once or twice every year and have never seen a crappie come out of that place. Of course there didn't used to be that many Walleye in that section of the river either and every year there are more and more of those.

Thunder --
The orford set back you are seeing more and more walleye?  I fish the set back in piermont once and great while but hasn't really produce much for walleye the past couple years.  Then again i really haven;t fish there real early or in to the dark.  The one time i fished into the dark we picked up one small walleye.

I've never actually caught them in the setback but I have caught them going into it (casting from shore at dusk where the inlet is). I didn't fish the river at all last year but two years ago it was pretty easy to catch them in that area trolling the main river. I would say your best bet is the main river though as the inlet only seems to produce them for a few specific days in the spring.
