estimating a trouts age
« on: Feb 18, 2010, 01:32 PM »
does anyone have a way to estimate a trouts age?  I know there are alot of variables but there has to be some general rule.

Try to find some whitepapers on the given area and see what you can deduce. Lots of variables; species, water temps, food sources etc....

Most accurate way is to count otolith rings under a dissecting scope.  But there is probably a fairly good regression curve to show a size to age comparison for the given river or lake system of interest.  However, it really gets confusing trying to convert trout years to human or dog years.
