carnivorous suckers!
« on: Feb 10, 2010, 02:22 PM »
It has happened again. while jigging for walleye with a spoon (swedish pimple #3 and even flutter spoons) and 2-3 in minnow, a nice mark comes in on the vex and wham! SUCKER!!! (redhorse i think) right in the mouth. (we keep em for lake trout bait) It happens a few times every year, wondering if anybody else experiences these aggressive sucker hits. Jigging a foot to 6 in of the bottom.

Ya in CT I catch them a spoons sometimes when I am trout fishing. They murder the spoons to like a cross between a pike and a striped bass

When those guys will hit minnows or spoons...they'll totally take feather/hair jigs like candy.

One time I caught a sucker so I gutted him(to use him for bait) and dumped the guts down the hole. I thought this might attract a big trout but instead I watched another sucker come in and eat the guts on my camera. Scared all my perch away too.

I've never heard of it. But I don't deal with suckers much.
Having a crappie day and loving it!

I'm always dissappointed thinking that I've got a big trout on the end of the line just to pull up a big sucker.

We would fish for red horse and white sucker in the spring when they are running the rivers in Minnesota. They love night crawlers, on the bottem. We would fish them a lot like fishing cat fish. Their a great fight on light tackle. They are very good smoked. Very good pickled as well.

Wesson4 I would like to learn how to make a good fish cake. I don't want you to give up any secrets or anything like that, but if you have a good recipe for them I would appreciate getting one.
