The only safe way to access N'west Bay is to park at the Tongue Mtn trailhead and hoof the 2 miles to the lake opening of N'west Bay brook. As of this past weekend ice was "sketchy" max of 3" up towards Fan Point

With the snow coming will be hard to see if it is skimmed over...

With the snow coming will be hard to see if it is skimmed over...

It will be VERY HARD TO SEE .... there were no heaves or anything .... just open water (at the time) between two huge slabs of ice ....   we crossed it yesterday at first light ... you could look at the opposite side and see it was 6 inches thick .... we just pushed our sleds across and took a giant step

On the way back in it had skimmed over but hadn't gotten any wider ..... so if the snow falls on it and covers it you'll have no idea it is there!

The second island also has a big ridge but it has heaved way up so it is very noticable.
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.
