If cost is an issue then it's tough to beat the 2hp Strikemasters for power to weight ratio.  They are also renowned for their excellent customer service

Hi Gang!
A friend asked me how he was suppose to  break a power auger in thats new before the season starts.  I have never owned a new one so I told him to run it an hour.  He asked how to hold it up for an hour and I couldnt think of anything . What do u guys do to break in a new power auger???

Da Roc, I never break anything in, just like a lawnmower, fire it up and start cutting.

As far as breaking it in, anything 2 stroke, I use twice as much oil as rated. Example, my auger is 50:1 so I put 25:1 for the first gallon of gas. Other than that not much.
Every plastics manufacturer claims plastics outfish livebait. So now I use livebait just for the increased challenge.

Da_Roc ,             What about telling him to hang the auger by the handles using a rope thru the garage rafters, leaving the garage door open obviously to keep from being fumigated.

I'll go with Mr Seaguar says
Just mix your first 2 tanks of gas double the oil ratio. This will help the rings seat and will insure all the bearings are well lubed, after that you should be fine. Just be sure to take a extra spark plug and wrench with you. Nothing worse than a fouled plug and no way to fix it, and especialy if the fish are biteing. Also Da_Roc have your friend do what all Males never do, READ the manual!  :) :)

He read the manual and it said run the auger till it smooths out.  Bascially  gave no time or  oil mixture other than 50:1 mix and use only that mix.  So There ya go he read it and it said little to help him.  I run mine an hour before each season then see during running if it needs a tune up or what ever.  I have a strong 19 year old boy who likes to run it and can hold it up for ever if I want.  Last year he even tried to dig dirt with it.  I ended up buying new blades.  I  sent my blades in for sharpening (all three sets) and I bought two new sets just in case.   So it is all good this year ready to drill many holes.  Tournament's here I come.  Hope I find out how to break in a new auger for my buddie. I would hate to see his wear out prematurely or worse yet not work well when hard water hits.  I have seen many augers not start after there first start last year.

Here is some interesting reading, although it is pertainting to 4 stroke engines. There is a lot of mith in the "break in" process.   http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Da_Roc  I agree with the other guys, though I wouldn't go quite as hvy as dbl the oil mix. I'd run the first tank of gas through on the heavy mix side, maybe an extra ounce to the gallon. Then I would make sure not to run the engine at full throttle right away. As far as running the auger off the hardwater, on my 3hp Jiffy I take the auger off the powerhead and I find it the handles fit nicely between the rungs of a 6ft ladder. I can start and run the engine, minus the drill, suspended safely off the 6 ft ladder.    GOOD LUCK & TIGHT LINES  >>>>>>  panfishhead  ........   ;)

If you can afford it; Get a Husqvarna. or Normark Fin Bore III! These might be the most expensive ice augers; but the are simply the BEST, and you get what you pay for.

They are Half the weight of other ice augers, comes equiped with a catalytic converter for no annoying blue smoke, low fuel consumption, an Air Purge system for Cold starts (re-circulation of hot exhaust gases, inorder to make starting easy in cold weather).

I bought a Mag 2000 last year (Strikemaster). Its a single blade power auger, but its lightweight. Been a very reliable auger..I punch LOTS of holes, and also let my brother punch holes with it too. We mostly jig fish as well. The nice thing about a single blade is when it comes time to replace a blade, its not nearly expensive as a multiblade. Also cuts a clean hole with no inside edge/lip in the bottom of the ice hole, like on some 2 blades. The blade has kept sharp still, I bought an extra, havent had to change it yet.

My Jiffy 3 hp just fits across a plastic milk crate, the kind used to hold 4 - 1 gallon (4L) jugs of milk.  I fire it up and test run it on the crate.  Only problem is the oily exhaust residue on the plastic, so drape a chunk of newspaper by the exhaust.

I just go a little heavy on the oil in the mix and don't run it at full throttle until after a few holes (10-15). A lot of trouble starting at the beginning of the season is because of failure to empty the gas out of the motor and run it dry or putting fuel stabalizer in it before storage.

I have had two Jiffy's over the years (30+) and broke them both in by running a tad more oil in the first tank of fuel and that was it. They have been dependable and get the job done. I always check them about now to be certain that they start and run well as with some luck we will be on the ice in a few weeks and a sick auger is no fun.
Good thing about prisons- they reduce the potential number of fisherman on the ice!
