Laker Rods
« on: Sep 13, 2009, 05:19 PM »
I was wondering of a good rod/reel combo under 60$ that would be good for going after lakers(state record is 28-5) and also double up as a pike rod.If it helps for anybody in SD I will be fishing Pactola reservoir(deepest part is roughly 150 ft.)

The laker rods I like to use range from 35 to 40 dollars. Jason Mitchell 36" Mackinaw or DLF custom laker rods 28". As for combos I have not seen any unless a shop puts there own together.

I've seen a Dave Genz Laker rod combo for $60.  Other than that I haven't seen any other combo.

I just bought a meduim heavy frabill bro combo for cheap. The rod seems pretty decent but I don't think the reel will make it through too many trout.  Atleast, I hope it doesnt.  I want to catch some hogs...  :P

I have a short Heavy with a big reel. I like big lures

My local shop sells an okuma fs-15, shakespeare 30" sturdy stick combo for pretty cheap ($45).  I put fireline on the reels (I have 2) and use them mostly for lakers but caught lots of pike on them.  I fish lakers in 180 FOW.  I swear by Okuma reels, for the price they really perform, I have 2 for ice, 2 for freshwater and 2 for saltwater.

The ones we use are custom and run at least $35 just for the rod. Mine is 42" and works great.

The Thorne Bros. ones I have looked at will run you $90 for the rod.

Gary Roach has some new rods out that are targeted toward lake trout and pike type of jigging.

its hard to beat st. croix 28-32" med rods. handle plenty of BIG fish, just put a good real with it and you'll easily be under your 60 dollar limit.

I'm using Gary Roachs 33" Walleye Rod - medium - have had no complaints - using it for Lake Trout now - featherweight type rod.

I have the St Croix 28" - great rod for the $$$ - make sure you match the reel (drag).
