Cascade Reservoir
« on: Dec 14, 2009, 07:07 PM »
I visited Cascade Reservoir yesterday with a friend from Boise and surprisingly, there was plenty of ice for us to fish.  I don't recall ever ice fishing this early in Idaho.  We fish the north end of the reservoir near Tamarack and there was nearly a foot of ice and we were able to fish in 15+ feet of water.  There was a pretty good perch bite but only lasted a couple of hours.  The rest of the day was very slow (cold and windy too).  Nonetheless, we brough home 14 perch from 9 to 12.5 inches and threw back nearly 10 that were a bit smaller.  I am heading back tomorrow weather permitting so I will give an update if I make it back up there.  Good luck to all!!!

We were using a variety of jigs tipped with pieces of nightcrawler.  I used an imitation bloodworm, a light green glo worm and a purple teardrop most of the day.  My friend was using a purple ratso and an orange teardrop....not sure what else he used.  They all caught fish but the glo worm was my best producer.  We didn't see anyone else catching anything because there was nobody else.  We were the only ones there all day on Sunday.

Try cutting up one of the smaller perch you through back and using it for bait . It stays on better and does better than worm .Curt G.

Agreed Curt, hard to beat a little white perch meat, I try to cut little ribbons so you get a little wiggle! I caught a big rainbow on perch meat this summer, that was a first for me! You can pop the eyeballs out and use those too if you want to save the perch for you to eat, I usually just hack up a little one and use it tho....

Well.....went back up to Cascade today only to fish for an hour and then head back.  It was snowing and blowing so hard and snow was accumulating fast that I didn't want to risk the drive back by waiting.  The good news is that the fishing was pretty decent for the hour that I fished.  I had action the whole time and really hated to leave.  I saw your recommendations to use cut bait and I have done this many times in the past but for some reason we can't get it to work ice fishing at Cascade.  It works like a charm at Magic Reservoir for us though.  That is why we are using the worms but would much rather use cut bait if it worked.  Maybe I'll give it another shot this year and see what happens.  Will post again after I have another chance to go.  Good luck!!

Spent last weekend fishing Cascade Reservoir.  We fished the upper end of the reservoir on Saturday near Tamarack and did pretty well on perch but wasn't our best day by any means.  I'm not sure the numbers but we did manage enough for a fish fry that night for 7 people.  I would say we had nearly 20 fish that were all 10 to 13 inches.  We had a couple of trout also with the biggest being roughly 20 inches.  We were just using jigs tipped with worms in about 20 feet of water.  The new fishing hut from santa worked great as well as the new Showdown fish finder.  We fished near Sugarloaf campground on the east side on Sunday and the fishing was very slow.  We only fished in about 12 feet of water and my buddy caught 2 perch worth keeping.  I had my first day of being skunked in a long time.....very depressing...but guess that's why it's called fishing and not catching.  The ice is in great shape with nearly 12 inches minimum everywhere we went.  It was darn cold both days so thankfully we had the fishing shelters and heaters.  Most likely going back again next weekend so I will send another report next week.  Good Luck to all!!

I spent last weekend on Cascade Reservoir again.  We were targeting perch on the north end of the reservoir near Tamarack both days.  Saturday was very moderate action with 21 perch that were large enough to throw in the creel and Sunday we only contributed 3 more.  We fished almost all daylight hours on Saturday but Sunday we quit around noon since it was so slow.  Normally we will catch a random trout at some point throughout a weekend but didn't even manage to catch any of those.  The good news is that the bigger perch are over 13 inches.  I have some photos to post of the fish we ended up with and will put these on here later today or sometime this week.  Has anyone else been out on Cascade recently?  We fished near Sugarloaf Campground a couple of weeks ago and that was fairly disappointing.  We would like to find some different spots to fish rather than going to the same place over and over but we just can't find anywhere that produces as many fish.

So what are you guys using? lures, bait, depth?  I have tried about everything.  I have only been able to catch trout and not very good at that either.  I fish this lake a ton year round, mainly for bass and perch.  Which i do really well except thru the ice.  I guess the perch just aren't where they are during the spring, summer and fall?  I don't have any techy equip, just a auger and shelter.  I tend to fish an area around our cabin.  seems most of the fish are being caught around the island, crown pt and city ramp during the winter.  any help is appreciated.  TIA

The bait was worms and cut bait on a variety of jigs/spoons. Fishing in about 18-22 feet of water off Poison Creek. Action was decent on Saturday and real, real slow on Sunday.

I've not fished Cascade in the summer so can't really comment on the fish being in different area from summer to winter.

Tiger Muskie have been planted in there in the past, about 500 in '07.  I would say not much of a fishery for them in Cascade at this point. We did accidentally catch one on Little Payette lake a few years ago.

It was. Ultralite gear, tossing a little panther martin and this thing latches on. It was only 6-7 lbs but still took awhile to get in and even longer to revive.
