Catching Shiners
« on: Jan 19, 2010, 08:45 AM »
I've heard a few here mention they get their own shiners.  Always have just gone to the shop but would be interesting in getting some for myself.  Any tips on where and how you guys get them (besides the tank at the bait shop that is)?  What size can you get around here?

i threw a few of my dads traps out the other day, but no luck,. never tried it before. i think its a bit late. from what ive read/heard, start trapping early before winter comes around. then the challenge is keeping them alive. depending on the spot, decent size goldens, dace and others should be able to be caught

Mostly small ponds for shiners
Rivers are where I got some nice Creek Chub.
Scout out a few places in the summer. Try x-small hook with bread ball.
Once you find them, you could throw in a trap for some small to med. size ones and fish rod and reel for the 6"-8" pike size bait.
